Scott310 137 Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Hey guys I am loving the new Emby Theater. Its smooth, quick to load, and easy to navigate. Great Work! I have one small request though. I'm hoping that you guys will consider adding an opacity or dimmer slider for the backdrops and video backdrops. On my current setup it is just a little too dark. When there is a video backdrop it is kind of a struggle to see what is going on in the background. Thanks guys and keep up the great work!! 27
Koleckai Silvestri 1154 Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I agree. Would like them to be more obvious myself.
AdrianW 1058 Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 More than one of us mentioned this during the alpha. Luke just seems a bit reluctant to change it.
Scott310 137 Posted January 23, 2016 Author Posted January 23, 2016 That's a bummer. I hope Luke will reconsider. it's kind of a deal breaker for me... 1
AdrianW 1058 Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 Well, the more people that "like" the first post should show Luke how important we think it is. Perhaps change the thread's title to mention that backdrops and video backdrops are too dark.
Scott310 137 Posted January 23, 2016 Author Posted January 23, 2016 Unless I'm missing something it doesn't seem that I am able to change the title otherwise I would...

Scott310 137 Posted January 23, 2016 Author Posted January 23, 2016 hmm I tried that but it still won't let me change the title. weird...

Scott310 137 Posted January 23, 2016 Author Posted January 23, 2016 I reported it requesting the title change...
epayson85 72 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Couldn't agree more on this. I was using emby for WMC this weekend and I can't see myself using emby theater until this is adjusted. What a better experience emby for wmc is compared to theater. Themes and different views are a big need for theater. Everyone has different preferences on how they like to browse their media and being locked down in theater just won't fly.
Emaster 10 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 I think that it's perfectly fine as it is. Sure, it can be slightly more transparent although I think that will make it more difficult to read the synopsis with bright backdrop imges/videos.
epayson85 72 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 You can do a dark opaque / transparent bubble behind the text with the bright back ground. Kodi and mymovies for wmc does this. Again different themes is key. Also I love Emby for wmc because you can actually see the entire movie theme video where kn theater a lot of it is blocked by the poster pic and text.
Logos302 86 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 I think that once themes get added that this will be a non issue. 2
arrbee99 1815 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Also think the backgrounds should be a bit more visible, a slider would be ideal, regardless of the theme.
Xzener 729 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 (edited) Hopefully this will be configurable in the general settings eventually. I've been asking to lighten the backdrops/video backdrops since alpha testing. This is a popular thread, the more "likes" on the first post the better. The issue has been raised on Github... https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby.Theater.Windows/issues/294 Edited January 26, 2016 by Xzener 1
njoak 23 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Are my eyes playing tricks on me or are the backdrops brighter now? Just browsed shortly a couple hours ago while starting some kids shows, but thought things looked much better...
Xzener 729 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) No, perhaps a different display?? Mine are still so dark, I can hardly see them. Which is why it should be configurable. Here are a couple pictures taken. First one, ambient light within the room... This on, the lights are off... While the camera focused, I could see the backdrop becoming more apparent. But this is not even close to what my naked eye sees. If this is what I see, I wouldn't be complaining. Edited January 27, 2016 by Xzener
njoak 23 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) Well ok, probably me then... The display was the same but the lighting may well have been different. I perceived the backdrops pretty close to how I see your second pic and I too thought they didn't need to be brighter than that. Had to check real quick once more just now, and also fired up old MBT to compare. And yeah, the backdrops surely look a little bit darker in new ET and that made me again wish they were brighter. But what struck me more was how much nicer the visual impression as a whole is in ET - much silkier and stylish somehow, and more 'pop'. Began to wonder if the darker backdrops are part of that and I wouldn't want to ruin the general impression by making them brighter, but I don't know. Could be that one gradually gets used to the new look as well I guess. Anyway, interesting in its own how the impression can change, with lighting and reference and probably displays and display settings as well... I also noticed the difference between dark and bright backdrops - dark ones look too dark to me and are difficult to see, bright ones I have no issue with and it is questionable if I would want them brighter. Maybe I happened to look at some brighter backdrops yesterday. So I agree a slider is probably a good idea. Otherwise or in addition maybe it would be possible to programmatically normalise the effective brightness (after dimming) of the backdrops to even out differences between bright and dark ones? (probably a long shot and a question for Luke in that case). Edited January 27, 2016 by njoak
Jdiesel 1431 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) I am curious if those who are finding the backdrops too dark, are you using the correct colorspace and have you calibrated your display? Maybe you are just crushing your blacks. I find that my backdrops are just bright enough to not be distracting. Try this black clipping test video to see if that is the case. https://www.dropbox.com/s/226bl52b8kqscwf/1-Black%20Clipping.mp4?dl=0 Edited January 27, 2016 by Jdiesel

Maybe you are just crushing your blacks. I know I haven't. I am just someone who wants to watch movies and television on my computer. I am not a graphic artist or professional videographer so I don't need to spend the time doing this.
AdrianW 1058 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 I haven't had my plasma professionally calibrated - but I've used a couple of calibration Blu-rays and got it looking damn good. ET's backdrops are too dark on my plasma and on my Dell 1440p monitor. But it is personal preference - I don't think there's a right and wrong here, we'd just like the ability to adjust the brightness. Either with a slider of even something as basic as manually editing a config file.
Jdiesel 1431 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 I definitely agree that the brightness could be bumped up a notch or two in the short term until full access to the skinning backend is available.
epayson85 72 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Brightness levels on TV have nothing to do with it. I don't want ANY filter on my back grounds. Kodi, mymovies, Emby for wmc... None of them use filters and display the backdrops / video themes in full beautiful colors. Hell I'm using my Netflix app right now on my firetv... The back drops are fully displayed and look awesome. You protect the text so it can be read and everything else should be clear. 3
