Pirlo1966 22 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Hi Am using synology NAS running server Versie 3.0.5785.0. Client is Shield TV with android 5.1 running latest emby beta. I'm aware of the issues to playback DD in < android 5.1.1. But since I'll have to wait until nvidia rolls out android 6 to shield TV I need to find a solution to playback true hd movies. I know I can play DD movies by setting "compatible' play back but it doesn't work with true HD. Emby server always want to transcode instead of streaming the movie. But my NAS (synology 1815) cannot handle heavy transcoding. How can I make sure emby server NEVER transcodes?

You can look here for a linux-focused workaround http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/29478-feature-to-force-directplay-only-without-any-detection-and-disable-all-transcoding/.

I don't think that is going to work as I imagine playback will fail for him on the Shield. If not, then we need to change the profile to allow it to direct stream. 1
foghat 65 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 If you are interested in trying kodi, they now have non-official version that supports HD audio pass through.
DreadManX 0 Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I'd donate to help promote the ability to transcode on the Shield. I already bought the lifetime subscription. Currently if I pause a video for more than 30 sec or so the video never recovers only the audio continues on. Basically it'd be nice if the emby client did some checking to see if the host has the ability to transcode via a gpu or similar.
Pirlo1966 22 Posted February 27, 2016 Author Posted February 27, 2016 So, android TV 6.0 is out now on Nvidia Shield. Any chance I get true hd movies to direct stream instead of transcoding which my synology NAS cannot handle?
ebr 16169 Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 I don't think 6.0 will have much bearing on transcoding decisions. That's what the Nexus Player has been running for several months now.

That's what the Nexus Player has been running for several months now. Allright. I probably was wrong to guess that once DD would be fixed on the Nexus (> android 5.1) dolby true HD movies would direct play in DD core if not in HD rather than be being transcoded. I have quite some movies I cannot playback on the shield cause emby server transcodes instead of direct play. What should I be investigating for? All my movies are in mkv containers. What should I report in order to understand why they are being transcoded?
ebr 16169 Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 If the only audio they have is TrueHD then that is probably your answer but have a look here. 1
