Using MBT 3.0.5086.905 and server  3.0.5083.27698, I am getting the above error message for most of my (HD) files.  Do I need to setup/install some codecs?

No but maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling lav filters

I uninstalled the Shark007 codecs (that worked perfectly in media center and wmp), reinstalled the lav filters I had downloaded, then for the first time I saw the MBT setup screen..  and videos then magically worked in MBT.  Hopefully I don't find anything that still has a problem!

The problem is as far as I know that Shark007 doesn't install LAV in the standard location. So that is why when you went from their version to the real version it started working. Wish Shark would just install them in the correct location and there would be a lot less problems.

That would be true, but also relying on your users to not select a custom install will always cause problems.  There's always someone who installs their games to C:\Games...

True and eventually I'm sure this will be improved. This is an early alpha version.

the install location isn't a problem. the problem is we try to talk to the LAV api and it fails. maybe it's installed differently under shark, or maybe your version was too old. i'm not sure.

Older version of Shark is likely the problem then.  I hadn't updated in months.
