Should I upgrade my router? Down speed vs up, what's more important?

Hi again folks.

 

So I'm almost happy with my setup here, except that I cannot stream 1080 from my server without lag. I can stream 720 good enough with my DIR-635 router, but it has just fast ethernet with max 100mbit down-speed (My ISPV provides 150/20 for me, but I utilize 100/20)..

Will it help if I upgrade my router to gigabit? Does the +50mit down-speed help anything for HD streaming?

Your ISP speed will only affect and limit your connection from outside your network. This speed is limited by your modem and your ISP. You would be limited by upload speed though, not download speed.

 

Increasing your direct LAN speed will help with streaming to multiple devices within your network. This is what your router will affect. I've found that 100 megabit isn't sufficient for my network needs. The network will get congested. Everything in the house is 1000 megabit with my server using multiple 1000 megabit connections to the router. The next step for me would be outlaying decent cash and upgrading the network to 10 gigabit or 40 gigabits.

Yes sorry I forgot to mention that it's outside network streaming I am after.. Streaming from my GFs house and to my server at home.. Will 150/20 be better than 100/20 for that purpose? (In that case I need to upgrade router. DIR-635 only supports 100)

In that case it is the upload speed from your server that will matter and this is determined by your ISP/service.  You would need to upgrade that.

 

Also note that the numbers they quote as speeds are "up to" numbers and not guaranteed...

No... The limiting number here is the 20 not the 100.

Yeah, but I wish I could play 1080, even on 4mbps only, but that's not possible. I have to go down to 720 actually..

It comes down to the bitrate of the media you are trying to upload.  What percentage of 1080p media is below 5mb?  What device are you trying to play the media on?  You listed your download/upload speed does your GF have the same connection speeds?

I have 50/25, and the 25 up is more than enough for me to play my content at my parent's place with no problems when I set the setting to 5mbps. I can go higher, but i like never having to worry about buffering, plus there is almost no noticeable difference in quality.
