Subtitles on by default?

I have a lot of foreign content (read: anime) that have subtitles that I have to enable individually before playing a file. I couldn't find an option that would let me have subtitles on by default in either the Roku app or the server. Did I miss something?

What are your server user preference playback settings set to?  User Icon top right-Settings-Playback settings

I had no idea that existed. I'll take a look at it.

Edit: Seems to work in general. But seems I have some files with incompatible subs. Thanks!

Try changing this setting to "ON" in the Roku settings menu?  I believe it is set to instant replay by default.

Yes, that's on, but I guess it's not compatible with Emby anyway. I went to Plex and it plays them just fine.

We do support subtitles so if you were to give a specific example I'm sure we could figure it out. Thanks.

I scrapped my install so I don't have the log files anymore. All I could tell you is that they were .ass subtitles.

Sorry for the odd screenshot but this shows an example of what I'm looking for. Neither the subtitle or the added English onomatopoeia appear when I played it in Emby. Plex plays them without issue.

Some people abandon all hope and jump overboard too early. The ship isnt even sinking.

But, I digress. I have this exact same episode, with the exact same issue. The issue it seems is there are chapters embedded into the mkv as well as subtitles. Even when enabled on the roku these subtitles do not work. The side effect of the chapters embedded? The chapters (mediainfo v0.7.62 calls it "menu") appear to become a new subtitle. Weird thing is I see a new subtitle, marked und. Choose this and the videplayer locks up, the roku eventually reboots itself. So in the interest of solving this (my daughter is an anime addict) in a bit I will send you a forum PM with a link to this file. My upload speed is only 512Kb/sec. Just letting you know ahead of time what to expect.

(150 MB) / (512 (Kb per second)) = 0.651041667 hours

Edit: 36 minutes left [emoji14]

Just as a starting point, they work in the web client right? i tried that file in chrome and it seems fine to me

@@Luke with chrome on android they work. Firefox on desktop they dont work and roku they do not. The issue may be with roku because you get a 2nd subtitle besides the .ass, one called und, choosing this is how you stop the video player and roku reboots. This issue may be beyond control until roku fixes it in their firmware.

I don't get the und

ok i see the und in the roku app. that's probably just an isolated issue in the app itself.

Ok, i've got that fixed with a server update. we're just going to have to force it to transcode.
