Am I better running Emby Server on Windows?

Am I better running Emby Server on Windows? I currently run it on Ubuntu 14 Server.

The main reason for asking is to take advantage of intel quick sync transcoding as this is not supported in Ubuntu / Debian and mainly in windows.

What is the stability like on Windows? If I am using a Windows VM in a hypervisor would I be able to benefit from Intel Quick Sync?

How much difference does Intel Quick Sync have on cpu performance?

The processor is an Intel i5 4670k

I had running Emby Server on Windows 8 and 10 for many months. Didn't have one crash.

I don't think quicksync will work within a VM.

It works. You just need the right hypervisor. The increment in performances are on the order between 4x to 10x.

The problem is ffmpeg usually locks up after awhile (while other software like handbrake doesn't locks up at all)

Would proxmox come under the right hypervisor list?

Proxmox, I tried it until vomiting... I could not make it accept the passthrough of the intel hd. I suppose that things will change when the project kvmgt will be merged into the stable and thus will reach proxmox too.

Right now XenServer (the distribution) is able to passthrough the intel hd. Unfortunately it has many other limitations (for example lack of usb passthrough), but it works. I am using the beta 2 of Dundee, but I suppose that older processor than skylake should be correctly supported also under the stable 6.5 sp1
