Argleblargle 1 Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 (edited) Just curious, is there any way to choose the codec/encode parameters (or even better, command line) used to transcode media for streaming? I ask because I'm interested in fiddling with various experimental codecs and optimising the codec used for streaming. For example I just streamed a track with Chrome and Emby served me MP3, while the optimal codec supported by my browser is Vorbis or possibly Opus. I also streamed a video and checked my server's running processes and Emby was transcoding it to H.264 (libx264), while the optimal (switch metric to something that isn't FastSSIM) codec supported by my browser is VP9. Is there any way to better configure these parameters for my environment? Edited December 21, 2015 by Argleblargle
Luke 42079 Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 HI, some apps have settings but for the web this is currently not possible. The term optimal really depends on what your goals are. Depending on whether your goals are geared towards cpu usage, bandwidth, or quality, the result may differ. VP 8/9 are in no way optimal in comparison to h264 unless your source content is already in that format. if you're transcoding on the fly, then that is a completely different ballgame.
