rarefc3s 1 Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 (edited) Emby Theater appears to transcode my movies (DVD; video_ts/VOB) when played locally on the same computer that has Emby Server installed on it. Is ffmpeg the only built in player? Just playing a movie uses about 30% of the processor and to compare I played the same movie in Windows Media Center and Kodi and neither uses nearly (hardly any) the amount of resources to do so. Is there an option to use a different player, VLC? To Emby's credit, at least it supports video_ts, unlike Plex! Edited December 18, 2015 by rarefc3s
ebr 16170 Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 There is a ton of discussion about this out here already. The short version is you should probably begin a process of looking to convert those to mkv or mp4 or some other more compatible and future-proof format.
rarefc3s 1 Posted December 18, 2015 Author Posted December 18, 2015 (edited) I've read that time and time again - convert or rip to a different file format. I guess I should wise up and start doing so! I probably should have gone MKV or MP4 when I got my first HTPC going. I did also find a thread about using external players so I will try that out and see how it goes but it sounds like I have a weekend of converting all my movies. Edited December 18, 2015 by rarefc3s
tman 47 Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 I had to go through that process myself a while ago - converting over 500 movies in VIDEO_TS/VOB format to MKV. I'm also trying MP4 now, which seems just that bit more compatible with different devices. It was a long haul, but worth it in the end. Google 'MKV Batch Converter' if you don't want to convert everything by hand!
