No Chapter Images

I don't seem to be getting any chapter images, it is set to run every night. I attached a log right after manually running it.

ffmpeg isn't able to extract them.  Not sure if we know exactly why but we tried two different techniques and both failed.

So any ideas on trouble shooting. The log only shows a couple of the movies that failed, but really none of them get chapter images.

Both Blu-Ray and DVD are full folder rips, no compression, mkv's or anything like that. FFmpeg does exist in the folder that it is looking in.

we don't extract for bluray folder rips. for dvd we attempt to extract but as ffmpeg has no direct support for folder rip structures, it often won't work.

There are a couple of questions regarding Chapter Images in bluray folders.

1. The chapter images are not being extracted as mentioned above. I have used MB/Emby since a long time, I remember that earlier versions will look for chapter points and extract images. Just trying to understand why this feature was removed in later versions.

2. The later versions of Emby including current versions (however, I am using version 3.0.5800.3), the bluray folder chapter points are marked at 0, 5, 10 ...min and so on, which is the default behavior now. This is pretty much for all of my bluray folders.  However, strangely, my latest movie was Star Wars Force Awakens, and the chapter points are marked correctly as included in mpls file and m2ts file. I am curious to find out why it worked correctly for this particular movie and not for others. If there is something that I can change in my bluray folders/files, so that it starts working for every movie I have, that will be great. I still understand that I won't have chapter images.

I am a bluray folder person as I like menus and extras (and I remove every other crap such as notices, trailers ect when I save movies in bluray folder) and use TMT6 as external player.

Hi, welcome. we never had it for bluray folders. The tools we such as ffmpeg use don't natively support folder rips. In order to create chapter images, we need to be able to seek within the content and that's exactly what is not supported with folder rips.

For others reading please note, this does not affect your ability to use and play folder rips from HTPC clients that natively support them. That will work just fine.

Luke,

Thanks for your quick reply. You are correct, it does not affect the playback ability for bluray folders, but it does affect the chapter points (if you care about them). So, to clarify my second question:

What needs to happen to get this:

Instead of this

Both are from Bluray folder source, one is from SWTFA and the other from Bridge of Spies.

We get the chapter points from ffprobe. Because it doesn't natively support folder rips, I think it's always going to be hit or miss. Generally speaking when a folder rip is comprised of only a single m2ts, it will have a pretty good chance of working out. Newer server releases have added improvements to treat those rips more like plain video files.
