newton031 0 Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I have my HTPC hooked up to my TV, and then my TV to my speakers (via spdif). Unfortunately, my TV only supports Dolby Digital passthrough. If I send a dts signal to my tv, then it's either no sound or downconverted to 2.0 PCM. But Dolby Digital 5.1 works fine. Is there any way for Emby Theater to automatically convert dts audio signals to Dolby Digital?
sh0rty 714 Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 No possibility to connect HTPC directly to the speakers? Gesendet von meinem HTC One M8 mit Tapatalk

newton031 0 Posted December 5, 2015 Author Posted December 5, 2015 Why not? My speaker is a soundbar with only 1 optical input, and my TV is using it.
bluemonkey07 590 Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 OK then , this may not be relevant to you but kodi has an option to do exactly this
ebr 16169 Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 OK then , this may not be relevant to you but kodi has an option to do exactly this Really? It seems like this would require licensed technology from Dolby Labs.
speechles 2055 Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Every app should have this feature. It is trivial to do. The blue neon roku app does this. Why would this require dolby labs license? Ffmpeg natively does this. Wouldnt it need the license, not the emby platform or clients making use of it as dependency? Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Luke 42077 Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 i believe roku has licensing terms with dolby (they paid) that allow any app on the device to use the feature. for different platforms it's a different story and dolby is selected about who they decide to go after. on iOS for example we would have to obtain a license from them in order to decode in app.
speechles 2055 Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) But if ffmpeg is doing the conversion, during transcoding on the server. Not the client themselves per se, but as long as the client supports ac3 in hls which most all do. So iOS could easily do this too. Is what you're saying is this is frowned upon without a dolby labs license? Even though you can, it would be a legal grey area and become a liability? Edited December 5, 2015 by speechles

My Sonos PlayBar doesn't support DTS but does DD, so I convert my DTS movies to create an additional DD track and then make it the default track.

I'd be curious to hear more about this matter as well. I just tried Plex. They fully support converting dts soundtracks to ac3/dolby digital on the fly in their desktop Plex Theater app.

Are you manually converting every movie? That'd take quite a long time if you have a large movie library
CBers 7450 Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) Are you manually converting every movie? That'd take quite a long time if you have a large movie libraryI use a tool that scans my movie folder and finds any without a DTS track but not a DD track, then converts DTS to DD, optionally keeping both tracks. Yes it can take a while initially, but each movie takes between 10 and 15 minutes to action. Edit: The tool I use is POPCORN MKV AUDIOCONVERTOR. If you Google it you'll find the download for it. speechles 2055 Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Every client can do this. It is ffmpeg doing the heavy lifting. The audio can now pass-through for me in 5.1 surround. My setup lacks DTS support. Why would licensing come into play at all here? This can be done on the fly with almost every emby client quite easily. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
ebr 16169 Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Licensing would come into play because Dolby Digital is a format owned by Dolby Labs. However, I haven't done any research here so I'm not sure of the requirements. We should look into it. I would just be surprised if it really were free for anyone to use on any device. Also our apps are endeavoring to direct stream or play whenever possible so you'd have to give that up to have this.

Guest asrequested Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 (edited) AC3 filter and ffdshow both do this with ease. I don't use the native decoders, I prefer ffdshow, I have much more control over the output. This is one of the main reasons I prefer Emby Theater to others. Kodi, for example, doesn't allow this. Luke, I hope you keep this in the new ET. Edited December 6, 2015 by Doofus
