Got remote access working...I think

when I go to emby.media and sign in, if I try and add my server manually using the internal IP that is assigned to the machine its loaded on, then I get connection failures.  I've done every setting and variation of port forwarding etc...nothing gives me access.

 

However, when I manually add a server using my external IP, then I get access just fine. I was under the impression that I was supposed to be able to use the internal IP address to connect via emby.media?

 

Am I doing something wrong or is this working as it's supposed to?

 

In addition, when I enter my external IP address with the port 8096 behind it in the address bar (not logging into emby.media), I can access emby remotely as well.  This is not via HTTPS.
