Help! New to Linux and at wits end...

Alright ladies and gents, so I finally got Linux installed on my system but I'm having major issues with trying to get the server installed... I am running MintPPC 11 on a Powermac G5, and I am brand new to Linux and cannot for the life of me get Mono (and by extension emby) installed... If someone could help out this poor noob with step by step instructions on installing the prerequisites and the server it would be much appreciated!

(Note) I've been to the mono website and followed the instructions but it didn't seem to be installing...

If I have googled this correctly MintPPC 11 is based upon Debian 7.0 (wheezy) so you should follow the instructions here for Debian 7.0

Right which I've attempted multiple times and still can't get it, when I run those commands through it gets mad at me because I don't have Mono, and when I try and get Mono it won't go through it only seems to be installing part of it...

I don't know if mono is compiled or any of the required binaries are compiled for powerpc. I will see if I can address the issue, but I'm not sure if obs supports powerpc.

I can enable ppc64le for xUbuntu14.04 will that do for you?

Would you be able to do it for Debian 7.0? I tried several versions of Ubuntu but PPCs are pretty picky... The current one I have is based off of Debian 7 (wheezy)

As long as the binaries are compiled for your architecture with the necessary dynamic links, it shouldn't matter what repo you get the binaries from so that repo should work (I would think...not sure if apt is ok with that sort of thing).

I am glad to hear that you are willing to try Linux!  If you keep at Linux, I think you will really begin to like it as an OS.  I certainly do.  As you are still a really green user, I would like to offer some advice: Google is your best friend.  99% of the time, every question or problem that I have had with any of my computers has already been answered on a forum like Stack Overflow, askUbuntu, Ubuntu Forums, the Arch Forums, etc.  In addition, there are a billion tutorials out there detailing how to use your Linux machine well.  Honestly, if you are having a problem specific to the OS (say issues with permissions), these forums are not going to be the best place to get the answer to questions: Google or your Linux distro's forums should be quite good.

Yeah I was googling for a good few hours before I posted here haha, the problem was I want finding very many straightforward tutorials, they were all kind of vague.... I'll try posting on the distros forum to see what they say. If you guys have any recommendations on other distros that work well on Powermac G5s I'd love to hear them!

I honestly wouldn't mind using Ubuntu but unfortunately I can't ever get it to boot after installing... For example I just burned the iso you linked and got it all installed but upon restarting it gets stuck on the bootstrap screen... It asks me to hit "l" for Linux or "c" for CDROM and after typing either letter it gets stuck on "loading second stage bootstrap" and a blinking question mark/Mac icon flashes for a bit and then it asks me to hit a key again and then we move into an endless loop... I have tried googling a fix but to no avail... So far the only distro I've been able to fully install and boot is MintPPC (I was able to get the regular version of Debian up and running but it had a lot of weird visual glitches...)

One google search for "powermac g5 ubuntu Loading second stage bootstrap" returns a whole bunch of threads on that.

*sigh* alright I'll keep trying to get Ubuntu to work but after hours upon hours of googling I'm starting to think it's a lost cause... :-/

Well I haven't enable the architecture on obs, I will do that this evening. What is going on with your Ubuntu install?

You should probably try this release:

Pay attention to the welcome screen, in the meantime I will see what I can do for you.

I'll try that release, but everytime I've tried installing Ubuntu it gets stuck on the bootloader. I have looked it up and tried multiple different things but I can't seem to get it to work and on top of that most tutorials I've found aren't very straightforward... :-/

I think because your architecture is ppc it makes it a little more difficult, you need to keep this in mind when following tutorials.
