How do I know if it's transcoding video or playing the original file?

I've set up Emby server on an OSX device. Scanned media in but then noticed on my Kodi windows client via the addon that the path was /Volumes/TV Shows and thats why the files wouldn't play.

I set a path substitution /Volumes/TV Shows/ to /Tower2/TV Shows

When I look in the web browser at info on a file the path is /Tower2/TV Shows/The Walking Dead/Blah blah.mkv

When I go back to the client the path was still /Volumes/TV Shows. I deleted the database and ran the addon again.

The path now shows plugin://plugin.video.emby/tvshows/

With this path will it be transcoding or playing a direct file if it's all in my home network? I really only want to transcode when I'm out of my house.

I hope this all makes sense, the more I read it the less it does.

Files will direct play. If you enable play from http, it will then direct stream/transcode.

I'm still not sure your paths will be valid for Kodi. You don't need to reset your database when doing path substitution, since we retrieve the path at playback time.

How do you want to access your files? Using smb or nfs? If smb, you'd need your path substitution to look like this: \\{computer name or ip}\Tower2\   then it should direct play in Kodi.

To verify the playback method, in the emby dashboard > active devices - just mouseover the Kodi one during playback.

Thanks for that. I played a file and it said 'Direct Play' on the dashboard. I want to use smb, in regards to the path 'Tower2' is the computer name.

Thanks again.

Perfect, as long as the path starts with \\, smb will be associated to it in Kodi.

direct stream = dlna without transcode ?

We don't access the files via dlna. We access them via http - either local ip or external ip.
