Can't update to 3.0.286

Each time I open Emby for WMC I get the message telling me the release is available, do I want to update and I say yes. Emby closes I see the progress bar on the download but Emby opens rather quickly before download is complete and the process starts all over again. I have quickly closed Emby when it reopens and watch the download complete and it will auto open a second time but still it wants to upgrade again. So I am stuck on 3.0.283. Any Ideas?

Sounds like something is preventing the the installer from running.

I have uninstalled 3.0.283 and downloaded .286 from the website and attempted to install it with no luck. Now there is no Emby in WMC.

Also had the same problem. Running the hacked W10 so I thought it may have been that, so I downloaded it from the site. Had some problems installing as it just hung at the end  So I restarted the PC

and update was done all been working fine. Other PC with W10 hack updated fine.

This is all that's in the mbc-install.log. I had this issue for a while and didn't have time to report it until now. My apologies.

Only difference for me is I'm stuck on 284.

There should also be an MSI install log.  More than likely, the actual install is failing for some reason.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I have installed in safe mode, I have installed "stable" and beta with no success. Can anyone think of something I can do or a log or something that can point me to what is failing. I have full admin privileges and only run Malwarebytes (MB) when I think I have a problem so I have no realtime antivirus installed. And yes I have run MB and it says I am clean. Therefore, I do not know of anything that I have installed that would prevent this update

Try looking in your normal logs folder for EMC.

I just tried again to update to 287, and this is the log I found in ProgramData\MediaBrowserClassic-Msi-log:

I dare not remove/reinstall EMC and lose my settings, unless you can assure me that won't happen. But I don't think that's gonna fix things anyway.

Actually, nevermind, I _can't_ uninstall it. I made a system restore point so I could try and when I attempted to uninstall, and I got a message that the network resource isn't available.

Looks like this problem.

Did you run some sort of disc clean up tool or go on a rampage deleting what you thought were temp files?

It's looking like I did. I don't remember doing so but I guess so. So I tried looking in the folder while EMC updated, and the msi for the update would pop in and out so quick I can't copy it in time Based on what I've read in that link, I'd need that to fix things, unless there is a better way.

So what should I do?

Posted

Try this.  This is the msi for the older release version so do the repair thing with that or put it where it needs to be and then see if the upgrade will work normally.

SikSlayer

Seems that didn't help...........this isn't looking too good.

What happens if you run that MSI directly?

SikSlayer

It says a newer version is already installed.

SikSlayer

It fails to install, nor can I repair using it.

Placing the msi in AppData\Local\Temp\Emby, where it says it's looking for it (even renaming it to 'MediaBrowserClassic.msi' like it says), does nothing different. It says the file is not valid.

Then I'm afraid I'm out of ideas other than finding some utility that can uninstall it for you or, possibly, uninstalling WMC and then re-installing it.  Maybe that would give you a clean slate...?

That's what I've tried. I guess I'm stuck until I rebuild my HTPC. Thanks for the help.

I had this exact problem.  I used a system cleaner and afterwards I couldn't update/unistall/repair.

I'm not sure if SikSlayer has resolved the issue, but I found a solution for SikSlayer or anyone else that may - in the future - come across an annoying problem like this.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/program_install_and_uninstall

It's a program from Microsoft that helps with install and uninstall issues.  Download it, run it, click on having trouble uninstalling, and when it shows you the list you choose the program you wish to uninstall, and in a couple of minutes it uninstalls if for you and you can install the new version with no problems.
