Question About Photo Upload

I wasn't able to find an answer to this by searching, just wondering about the behavior of photo upload.  Does it do a onetime copy of the photo's on my device to the upload folder, or does it synchronize the locations with the upload folder.  I'm just curious what will occur if i move photos out of the upload folder into other folders on my NAS.
