Nvidia shield TV - live TV transcoding: why?

Recommended Posts

All,

I have a Nvidia shield TV on the latest 2.1 firmware and running the very latest server beta that came out today along with latest emby client. I have my bitrate set to max (40mbps I think it is) and audio to direct. I have a silicon dust hd prime cable card tuner and using the built in emby TV service. The player is set to VLC. Shield and emby server are on same in house network.

Now with all this for some reason live TV is being transcoded. I would think that it would not need to transcode. All my mkv 1080p videos with either ac3 or DTS audio videos play fine without transcoding. Live TV would be mostly mpeg2 with some h264 streams and ac3 audio. The shield supports these codecs directly. Any reason why you guys think transcoding is happening?

The problem is that the Live TV is in a .ts stream and the players don't support AC3 within that container at this point.

Currently, I watch live TV from the Live Channels built in android app.  Since that uses the HD prime directly and RVU, it doesn't transcode.. it plays the MPEG2 stream directly.  Which means that when changing channels it happens very quick.  Actually quicker than the comcrap X1.

Yup that's what I've been doing. Channel changes happen super fast with the live channels app. I hope one day Emby can get to this. Along with eventually improving the guide performance Emby will then be killer for live TV.

EBR the built in player into Android TV must support this if Live Channels is working well. Is it possible to maybe code the condition to use the default built in player for live TV. Maybe put this as a user preference?

Live Channels doesn't use the built-in player. It uses a custom one built for it (which is also a version of the one we use now as our internal player).

But, 6.0 may have changed the game on this again so I'll have to go through another round of trying all the available options and see if we can get it to work.

I'd be more than happy to help test this, if needed.

I am wondering about the progress of this.  Having all of my emby channels in the built-in Android Live Channels app would be AMAZING!

Too many clicks to open Emby app (wait) -> Click Live TV (wait) -> Click Guide (wait)

Sigh, a sign of the times and user patience levels. All of the effort that goes into the app, reduced to "too many clicks".

Yes we'd like to add support for google live channels.

If everything in Emby were embedded into the LIve Channels app then it would probably end up being the same amount of clicks... no?

What, exactly, are you attempting to accomplish here?  The LIve Channels app is designed for Live TV but we could theoretically provide other content to it I assume.  However, their interface is missing many of the things that makes Emby Emby - like authentication and custom views for different users.

So, what is it you are really wanting?

Not that I want to tell you not to use Emby, but for live TV with one or more HDHomeruns and an Android TV box, look into the InstaTV app. It integrates with live channels perfectly. You do have to cough up 10 bucks for the codec license, but it really works great. It'll get you exactly what you're looking for with this request.

I used that for live TV and Emby for recording TV. Best of both worlds.

It's not end of the world if we don't see implementation into Live Channels. I'm just wanting some WAF (wife acceptance factor).

My use case may be different from others as I'm operating Emby remotely. I have a machine set up in one location (work) with a Ceton InfiniTV card + ServerWMC + Emby.  At another location (home) I have the ShieldTV.  I strictly use this setup for remote live TV watching (yes, streaming over the internet).

I don't use any emby features aside from the guide and watching TV live. I do not use the recording feature and its set up as a single user. Just would like a fast (and possibly native) option for pulling up a guide and quickly starting a channel stream.

To load the whole UI and be totally accessible?

I wish mine was that quick!

He's going across a remote connection too.

My interface loads in about 2 seconds.

I just timed mine a couple of times and without the Premieres row loading, it's about 3-4 seconds, but the Premieres row takes about another 8 or 9 seconds.

It's a whole lot better than it used to be, but I still occasionally get the very long load times I've previously reported, but it's not the end of the world :)

Better :)

I still get the occasional slowness, but it's much better than it was a few weeks back, even loading remotely over 3G.
