Album Timeline Sort Order

I'm struggling to work out how my music collection sorts itself when using the timeline option.

 

So all my albums filter into the correct year which is as expected.

 

What happens next though as to the order the albums actually appear, I have absolutely no idea what the logic is.

 

They are not in alphabetical order by artist or album, although there are clusters that do appear in order, they are not by release date order, they are not by album title order.

 

With over 3000 albums in my collection, i'd like to know if there is an option for further sorting within the timeline so the display actually makes sense.

 

My whole collection gets MP3 tagged properly before I add them into the library and this is the one bit im scratching my heard over.

 

Help would be apppreciated.

We have the ability to sort albums by release date, that's what i would suggest doing.

Sorry to re-open this old thread, but I too am mystified by the music sorting.

E.g. I choose sorting by release date (as you suggest Luke). Then still the alphabetical bar appears on the right side. Clicking it gives a sort-of alphabetical list (e.g. clicking M gives albums starting with 'M', followed by seemingly random albums afterwards). But it is strange to have the alphabet bar to begin with when sorting by release data -- a "year bar" would be more logical.

 

Besides, it'd be great to be able to have smart playlists based on e.g. year or decade -- but that feature request has been made elsewhere I believe.

So just don't use the alphabet bar when sorting that way. We'll make sure it is hidden. Thanks.

Hi - I'm running into a related issue where I would like to sort by Albums chronology; preferably by Album Year as all of my albums have this metadata.  I have my Albums sorted by "Release Date" as my only option.  However, Emby, on occasion, will try to update a small portion of my overall album collection with release date data.  When this occurs, my Albums view becomes disjointed where albums with release dates are shown before albums without.  I'm forced to delete the release dates on the few albums to restore the sorting of albums by Year.

Is there a way to sort the Albums view by "Year",  prevent Emby from attempting to add release date metadata,  or have Emby provide release date for all my albums?
