Roadmap for DRM Support

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm about to invest in some equipment for my home theater upgrade. Everything I've read so far is making Emby with HDHomeRun Prime + Android TV as the frontrunner, with the only main caveat being support for DRM-enabled channels. Can anyone comment on whether Emby has any plans to support DRM in the future? I saw the SiliconDust guys are planning this with their v1.0 software. Is there anything preventing this being replicated in Emby aside from the amount of development time required?

It's unlikely there will ever be support for DRM protected channels in Emby (or any other open-source application).

There are very rigorous rules about how this content is protected and every step from recording to playback, and that just cant be done in an open source application.

Anytime I read these pleas for DRM content this is all I can think of:

We could close source certain modules if we had to in order to satisfy an agreement with another party. So like any other feature request, we're monitoring it.

This would be nice, I'm already a lifetime supporter but I wouldn't be against this being a different add on, I would be willing to pay for it if there was some licensing agreement you guys had to cover.

Hopefully they can just close source the plugin and not parts of Emby itself, opensource is the reason I use this.
