Remote link won't work

I can't connect to my emby server on my phone without being connected to the network that the server runs on. I've had a look and all I can find is stuff about port forwarding. I'm kind of a novice, but I'm willing to learn (I want to be a software engineer). My server is running on a late 2012 mac mini, my home network is running through the old airport extreme, and my phone is a Nokia Lumia 630. Any help?

In your router you will need to forward port 8096 to the ip address of your Mac mini, but first you will want to make sure your Mac mini has a static ip address because if it is dynamically assigned an ip its ip address could change and so the port forwarding will be pointing to the wrong address

For remote access, do I need to pay for static ip address from my ISP?

Not if you use emby connect

Thank you for the help. Unfortunately, right after I posted the topic, my Mac died (the hard drive failed) and I had to go to get it repaired. Soon after that, the router at my house got changed (thanks to my ISP), though fortunately this router is more easily tinkered with than the Airport Extreme I had (port forwarding is a google search away, I've checked). I am not sure how to change my IP address from dynamic to static (I don't even know if I have a dynamic IP or not), so if anyone could help, that would be amazing. It may help to know that the server worked remotely for a short time (approximately 5 minutes) before it gave me an error message and refused to connect.

P.S. I have been learning about dynamic and static IP addresses at school recently, so I do sort of know what you are talking about  :)  :)  :)

Edit: I tried to connect remotely, and lo and behold it worked. Thanks for all the help!
