THANK YOU - But more issues in 3.0.5724.3

Firstly... a HUGE, HUGE thank you for finally getting rid of the hideous overlay in the browser video window... I've continually made it clear how horrible it was (as have others) and how it interferes with playback.  So to finally see it gone after so many months is a breath of fresh air... and the sole reason I updated to this latest version.

However... some rather major issues remain, the least of which revolves around populating people and images within emby.

Now I am aware that something was changed in how it handled that data... and that people should have seen those images repopulated... but it didn't work out like that and I have seen countless posts around the forums that show it's still not resolved. This release doesn't do anything to make it any better.

The biggest gripe I have is that people weren't told of the change, nor warned of what it would do. So for those of us that make use of the options to turn of certain sections of metadata once populated... well, we got screwed over in a big way.

You see I don't want 300 people populating the list. I want actors and director... that's it.  No one needs to know who was in charge of makeup and it does nothing to add to the home theatre experience having all of that extraneous data. So once a movie is freshly populated, I edit it, remove all those useless bits of info, lock the people data along with genres (because people keep adding stupid genres that aren't real), age ratings (because I adjust them to UK if they don't auto adjust) and finally images... because I am sick and tired of it overwriting the carefully chosen primary and backdrop ones that I select.

So my images didn't come back... in fact as far as actors and directors were concerned... it would only accept that those included in new additions existed at all, in spite of the fact that you could see thousands of actors listed in the 2000 movies I have.

Refreshing the folders doesn't work because as I said... people gets turned of.

As far as I can tell from weeks of playing around... and getting some very weird results... The only way to resolve this is to manually go through every single movie... turn people back on refresh (which doesn't always work, and you have to identify the damn thing again)... adjust the people to remove the crap and resave.

Only then did I start to see actors populating the pages again... except now I can't.

Because in this latest release.... you REMOVED the ability to list by people within the browser and that's the only way to quick see if there are changes to that list/number

Because the actors were already listed in the movie nfo, I now have no way at all of telling if they actually exist in the data base unless I trawl through looking for them in the actual caches and image files... which ends up being pointless anyway because as you already know... they did exist before but are simply no longer recognized at all.

So as you can imagine... I was very happy initially... but then got irked once more at something so fundamental being changed and still not entirely resolved because you didn't consider that people might actually use the features you built in. You broke functionality that cannot be fixed by any simple means and is causing me countless hours of wasted time having to fix what you broke... Not cool guys, not cool at all. Do you have any idea how much time I have wasted these last couple of months fixing the issues that were caused by shoddy releases that weren't properly tested... Because I'm betting I've wasted more time trying to fix things than was ever spent testing it.

I do have suggestions... one of which is forewarning people if changes will break functionality instead of keeping quiet about it, another is fully taking into consideration that people might actually be using the options built in as they are intended... and that making changes as you did will break them in such a way that it only a manual intervention on each and every file will resolve it.... causing dozens of hrs in wasted time to repair what you broke... That's not ok at all.

Oh and did you know that when viewing items via the browser the primary image now sits over the title?

One final thing....

Why is it... that on every single release we get a dozen different changes to the visual layouts that serve no purpose at all, things like moving the position of a button.... things like that seem to be changed without reason when important issues are left unresolved and schoolboy errors creep in. I does seem that things are getting so fragmented that no one person actually knows what's going into an official release because one minutes it's one way, and the next it's another... There seems to be a complete lack of consistency in the visual look these days and for people trying to develop a brand... that's a very, very bad thing to allow to happen.

You need to set out a design template and stick to it... Otherwise you risk alienating people new to the software when they see it constantly changing like that. Put some one in charge of the visual design and look of the GUI each aspect (WMC, Android, IOS and the Browser) and let them have final say on changes.

It's just a suggestion of course... but what do I know, I only worked for a software company for years, helped design game levels and did product development and testing... it's not like I have any idea about these things.

I don't think that is what he is implying.

Yeah I have been waiting for a fix on this as well in the past few server updates but it is still there.

I don't see it in on any of my desktops with IE11, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.  Is this perhaps a mobile device issue?

He knows how to productively report issues, it's been linked at him enough.  I choose to play along.  It's no LESS productive than aggrieved ranting.

According to the second link the issue is still persisting for other users as well.

Hi all,

I am using server Version 3.0.5518.7... I had to play around with restore for 3 days to get to this version...  I then stopped the auto upgrade function, as my system works sweet with this version (still under Media Browser :-) )

I suggest if you don't want the pain (and it is painful) and the surprise of your system getting broken by "new" functionalities... you should do the same...

I guess I have to upgrade at some stage, and that's why I come to the community and check out new server releases and read about the feedback...

I have been told there is an upcoming version coming up which will have less issues... I can't wait :-)

that aside, I think the developer team is doing a great job... They don't have the same budget as Microsoft, but they have lesser issues with the software.....

In regards to the text appearing behind the covers. I investigated further and found this has been reported as something else as well.

I was able to recreate the issue:

I have the text showing behind poster happening in my setup. I do not use cover art, however I've noticed it seems to happen when I have no backdrop for the content. The layout doesn't seem to adjust well to missing artwork.
