Windows 10 app inoperable

I did a clean install on both of my laptops.  It works on one and not on the other.  The one it does work on is my home laptop and local to my network if that makes any difference.

Update has been submitted to MS for certification. Unfortunatley,  they decided to have a complete review of the app this time and it will take a couple of days before it's live.

great thanks, looking forward to the release.

Oh awesome! I did read that there was supposed to be a new update that would address this issue, but that was posted on the 6th and it's now the 15th.

I'm glad I'm not the only one having the issue. The WMC really never had issues, but now that Windows 10 has gotten rid of it, I'm getting this issue on both laptop and desktop, which is a shame as I would love to use the app instead of the web version.

But glad to know that's there's a fix coming! You guys are much faster at catching and fixing issues that M$! :D

I too am having exactly the same problem.  If a fix is coming, will I need to update the app, or will it automatically update?

Depends on your settings.  For Windows 10:

How to enable automatic app updates

  1. Open the Store
  2. Tap or click the user icon on top, next to the search form
  3. Tap or click Settings
  4. Toggle On Update apps automatically

How to manually check for app updates

  1. Open the Store
  2. Tap or click the user icon on top, next to the search form
  3. Tap or click Downloads
  4. Tap or click Check for updates

FYI, appears the app update has rolled out now.

Hi I have applied the update and the app loads and metadata and menus appear with no problems, but the app won't play any content failing with a "The video failed to play, retry".

Hitting retry just makes a loading icon appear over the text.

I have tried various types of video mostly mkv (720p  with AC3) and (1080p with DTS).

I have tried different streaming settings.

I have an install on the same computer as the server but am running loopback.

I can move between menus and everything seems fine as long as I don't play video.

I'm having same exact problem as Scope99.  App loads (so the original problem is fixed I guess) but now nothing plays. I have verified that media plays via the browser.

I can now get into the app.  I am having random playback issues as well.  Video failed to play (not everything).  I have 2 movies that are almost the same and only 1 plays.  ex Machina plays, while Insurgent will not.

Hi All,

Just curious if you have tried to play the content (movie etc) in the native Win 10 Movies and TV app? The web client will use a different playback method. I had a similar problem earlier where some random mkv's with ac3 audio that should have direct played produced an error.  Anything with DTS will transcode which is another issue.

A couple of the windows updates and the current and last emby versions everything works fine. I just tried 10 or so random mkv's and all worked. Which I know is of zero help to you, but is encouraging that it will be sorted out.

Also, these movies play everywhere else fine without an issue.  (including the w8.1 app)

Not sure if best place to post this, Here goes, I have this app installed on my surface and get the same thing. Still hangs and the emby logo and then just closes. I have read over all the thread and did not see anything  that helped in correcting the issue in a Surface either. Some were in the last updates it just stopped working. Have had the paid version installed since it was released with little to no issue.

Have you tried uninstalling the app today andreinstall it? (A new version was released today)

Am having similar issue, app opens and goes to splash screen (see post#8) and basically does the same as in post #42 - opens goes to splash screen and minimises to taskbar. If I click on the taskbar icon it opens to the splash screen again and minimises again. Repeat. Can close the app by clicking on the close button if I can get there in time. Am using the latest dev server  3.0.5708.405, Windows 8.1 64-bit and the latest Windows 8.1/10 app (updated 15 min ago, so presume its the brand new version).

This may help.  I had the same error and 7 sent me this link which fixed the problem for me.  I just needed to do the Win7DSFilterTweaker part.  I think mine got screwed up after loading Shark codecs which disabled the MS video decoder.

Update successfully managed to fix the issue where the app hangs, so now I can see my movies and television shows successfully.

However, if I select a particular episode to watch, the episode that actually plays is a different episode entirely, so for example if I play S01E01 of a TV show, the Windows 10 Emby app will play S01E04.  I checked, and this does not occur when performing the same action in MB Theater, nor via the web interface.  So this must be an error in the Windows 10 Emby app.

Anybody else experiencing anything like this?  I am so appreciative of the app, and definitely want to use it, but it just seems it's at alpha at this point in the game.

Nope, don't have that issue.  I suggest posting it to a new thread.

Yes I did, and no help in fixing the issue. Also had a friend try the same on his surface 2 as well and same problem.

Thanks FrostByte. This was my problem. Shark codecs had disabled the Microsoft codecs, I resolved it by just reselecting recommended settings and choosing "I use Live TV" This ensured that the microsoft codec was not disabled. Finally the app works.

The only problem is it needs to transcode! Theater can direct play and can even use madVR. Does anyone know why this is? All my videos (MKV 720P AC3) and (MKV 1080P DTS) transcode. Is this a microsoft codec audio limitation? For instance is it that the microsoft codecs don't have licensing for AC3 or DTS? Can the app be setup to use installed codecs? Like shark codecs?

This is a deal breaker for me. lol All this trouble and now I'm not going to use it. At least I have the option, it is a real pity the interface is slick.

Hi,

In Windows 10 the only things that should be transcoding are dts and mpeg2. Windows has supported Ac3 since at least version 7. You should be getting direct play of mkv's of h24,h265(HEVC) and any audio except DTS. For those with DTS you get a stream copy of the video and a conversion of DTS to a supported format of your choice, Multichannel ACC is the default. I have changed mine to AC3 based on my preference.

You get digital out with AC3 over HDMI to supported devices, av recievers etc. Mpeg2 will probably be resolved by MS (really only impacts Live TV), DTS either by Passthrough audio natively in the OS or app.

Hope that helps

BTW Shark LAV etc only impact players that use Direct Show technology. MS introduced Media Foundation in Vista (I believe) as an eventual replacement. Most "modern" players that use Direct Show (like emby Theater) include their own internal codecs removing the need for additional third party codec installs as they can be problematic as shown.

That being said, I have found that the Nevcairiel default LAV install to be pretty good giving you what you need for Direct Show stuff but not messing up other stuff.
