Is it Possible to transcode at the backend with old cell Phone?

I'm just curious....I have an old LG Optimus G with 4 cores that is sitting there collecting dust and seeing how the new Plex and Emby backends have a distributed architecture, I was thinking maybe I could leave the Windows 7 machine running with serverWMC and then load the emby server on the cell phone and point the plugin to the Windows machine.

Is this something that is (or could be) possible?  All of these newer phones have a ton of cores and are optimized for video so it would be one way to recycle.

Currently there is no android emby server, but that said most android devices can have a Linux distro loaded on top, so that might be a possibility, the only issue I would think you might get is decking the cpu to max all the, also depends how the charge controller works on the phone, many charge to full and wont recharge until the chargers reconnected.

As a work around you can use a digitial time switch and then cycle the charge off for a few mins and then back on again.

But like I said im not sure how well the cpu will cope with a constant heavy load.

Also you may also want to use an otg cable and an external hard drive (if supported) for transcode as flash wont likely last as long or be as quick for transcoding.

I'm not sure if mono runs really well on ARM which most Android cellphones run on, but I'd be really surprised if the CPU was up to the job. It may be a quad-core, but it's still only a low-powered cellphone :)

They are "optimized" for video as you say because they use hardware decoding for codecs they support, but I wouldn't expect the CPU to be able to handle the decoding itself.

yea i predict it won't be long before emby server runs on android. perhaps one day we'll see it in the play store.
