McChen 7 Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 This problem has been driving me nuts lately on my Nexus Player. What happens when playing video in Emby is that there is a strip at the bottom 1/6 or so of the screen that is rendered only in black and white and the rest is color. This only happens when transcoding, with no transcoding it is rendered properly. It happens with video files as well as live TV. I tried it also on a different TV, same problem. And it only happens with the Nexus Player, it doesn't happen on my Shield TV. Nor any other Emby client including web, Windows 8, and Android. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Emby app and restarting the Emby server. Emby Server is a Windows machine and on version 3.0.5675.1. When I first installed Emby on the Nexus Player, I didn't have this issue and somewhere along the way this started happening. No config changes or anything, other than keeping up with the latest server and client updates. Can't figure out if this is a client or server issue. So odd. Anyone have any ideas?
ebr 16169 Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Sounds like a device or hardware issue. Check the HDMI connection. Make sure it is tight. Maybe even try a different cable or input on the TV.
McChen 7 Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 Yeah initially I thought it was a hardware or HDMI issue. But I've tried with two different TV's and cables. I definitely think it is a transcoding or decode issue, after trying to narrow it down. Here is why: I get the black and white band only when the video is transcoded by the Emby server. Turning the bitrate setting in the Emby Android TV client high enough to where it doesn't transcode, removes the band. I get the band only on certain video files. Some video files don't have it, some do. Appears to be about 50-50 from what I can tell, as with letterboxed movies the bottom of the screen is black anyways. With live TV (WMC backend), it seems to always be there. The size of the band differs depending on the aspect ratio of the source. It is larger for 16:9 videos and narrower for 4:3. But consistent other than that. Have no video or color issues with the Nexus Player in general or other apps on the device. It is only playback of certain sources being transcoded by the Emby server. Odd isn't it? Driving me crazy!
McChen 7 Posted July 23, 2015 Author Posted July 23, 2015 I just got a brand new 2nd Nexus Player and setup Emby on it and I still have the same weird color issue as my 1st unit. With the exact same videos and under the same conditions as the 1st unit. I also tried the Emby addon for Kodi and there I do NOT have the color issue, using transcoding or not. Perhaps this is an issue with the system media player on the Nexus Player? Though oddly enough my Shield TV does not have this issue. I noticed that the Emby Android app moved to a VLC based player, is this also planned for Android TV? Seems like the system player is a bit buggy, I've also found issues with anamorphic videos.
ebr 16169 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 It may have something to do with the specific encoding of those videos and how they are being transcoded by the server for playback on the NP. VLC in the ATV app is in beta testing now.
McChen 7 Posted July 23, 2015 Author Posted July 23, 2015 Oh great, hopefully the new VLC player fixes all this. Is the ATV app beta public? I'd be willing to help test
