Marchoglloer 0 Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Hi, I'm new to Emby, just been on a few days.. struggles as follows: First day, no problem, just the regular pangs of finding a new program, and getting it set up. Emby works for one day(ish). since day one. "Connection Failure We're unable to connect to the selected server right now. Please ensure it is running and try again." Trying to connect using the android app and the web client. same error error occurs while sitting next to server over wifi, on work wifi, and while using data over 4g. I have uninstalled the server, reinstalled the server uninstalled the android app, reinstalled the android app removed and replaced account in android cleared cache and data from android app Norton 360 Premier issues I have read of the problems faced by folks using Norton, and I faced similar issues after the first time I reinstalled Emby. I'm not sure why I didn't face problems with Norton upon initial setup, and for the first day. I was able to restore "mediabrowser.serverapplication.exe" after re-installation.. but I have a sneaking suspicion that Norton has blocked or removed something else, and I just don't know where to look. Even with that, Emby appears to be starting up fine, and I can access all its features using chrome on the machine on which it is installed. I'm running Widows 8.1 Thanks in advance for any help. CBers 7451 Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 (edited) Turn off Norton and see if you can then connect. If you can, then you need to configure Norton accordingly. Does your PC, where Emby server is running, have a static IP address? Does the Android app see your server? Are they both on the same LAN? . Edited July 19, 2015 by CBers
Marchoglloer 0 Posted July 19, 2015 Author Posted July 19, 2015 HI! Thanks for the quick reply. I have disabled smart firewall, autoprotect, sonar, and every other piece of Norton I could turn off, to no avail. I went into task manager and ended Norton as well. that also did not work. I do not have a static IP. The android app and web client both see my server. My server is connected directly to my router, while the android app is trying to connect through wifi from the same router (comcast/xfinity) Thanks!
CBers 7451 Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 A static IP is a real must, otherwise if/when the IP address changes on the server PC, the clients will have to be reconfigured to search for the new address. Although, if the Emby server PC has been on for a while and you clear data for the Android app, it should be able to find it. Do you have a file manager installed on your phone? If so, can it see the PC on the lan and access it's files etc.? I use ES FILE EXPLORER on my Android devices.
Marchoglloer 0 Posted July 19, 2015 Author Posted July 19, 2015 I have downloaded ES File Explorer.. I had to share my folders on my machine, but yes, I am able to access them with the App. Emby is still unable to connect. How do I check the Emby server settings on the android device to make sure that they match the Emby server on my machine?
Marchoglloer 0 Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 Unfortunately I have no idea what UNC paths or path substitution are, so I cannot respond to that question properly. I'm still confused why I should have a Firewall blockage now, with having been able to use Emby at the onset.
CBers 7451 Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 How are your folders configured in the Library section in the Emby Dashboard? Are they \\servername\drive\TV etc, or are you using F:\TV? The first method is called UNC.
Marchoglloer 0 Posted July 21, 2015 Author Posted July 21, 2015 We are so close! The moment I created my first path substitution, the phone was again able to see into the server. Creating additional path substitutions allowed access to the rest of my media. Next test was to walk down the street to get away from my wifi. At this point all I could get was the spinner. I could still see my folders, but was unable to access music, video, or even photographs. I switched off wifi altogether so there would be no conflicts, and let it try over 4g, but still no luck.. I then went and stood outside of a friends house to which I have wifi access, and turned wifi on again.. I got full bars, but still nothing but the spinner until I got back in range of my own wifi. I really appreciate you getting me this far, and look forward to more of your wizardry. Thanks!
Luke 42080 Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 What app is this? because android does not currently use the path substitution. And is the app unable to connect at all, or some kind of failure once inside?
Marchoglloer 0 Posted July 21, 2015 Author Posted July 21, 2015 I created the path substitutions on the Media Library page using chrome at: http://localhost:8096/web/librarypathmapping.html Creating the paths there allowed the Emby app on my android device to access the server.. Before, it could see the server but not access it. The android app is now able to access and play media while on the LAN, but not away from it.
Luke 42080 Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 perhaps it's just not able to get through your firewall and reach your server? Have you tested the web client while away from home, just for comparison purposes?
Marchoglloer 0 Posted July 21, 2015 Author Posted July 21, 2015 I'll give that a try in the morning. It's still a puzzle to me why it all worked for a day, and then quit.
Marchoglloer 0 Posted July 24, 2015 Author Posted July 24, 2015 Well, back to square one. Emby on my android phone will no longer connect to the server at all. I can see the server listed on the phone, but it will not connect. I made no changes. Also, before the phone would no longer connect at all, I did try to connect using the web interface away from my LAN and could not connect. Is there a step-by-step guide somewhere for checking my setting on the server and on the android device? Thanks!
CBers 7451 Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Clear Data on your phone and try again. Did you confirm that your Emby server PC has a static IP address?
Luke 42080 Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 also try the web interface just for comparison purposes.
plazma 13 Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 There are things (maybe you have already) for external access to work, the address will be diffirent, plus if you have a dynamic ip its likely to change at some point. As luke suggested I would walk before you start running. Post screen shots of your media library paths (in server management), if your using emby on windows (server) does it work in the browser on the same system. Is all your media on the same server as emby? Provide some more info and im sure we can to the bottom of your gremlins :-)
wolf359 6 Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Have you set your router up to open a port to connect. I had loads of trouble getting connected when not on the same router and trying to log on from outside my home network
