Delete command caused havoc in media folder

Hi Guys,

The other day (16 July around 9:30 pm) I tried to delete a media file from my library using the delete command in MB for WMC running on an XBOX 360 extender.

It threw an error saying the action could not be completed. This is no big deal, as I've had it happen in the past, too.

I finished what I was doing on WMC, then went back to my PC to discover that almost the whole folder with the file I wanted to delete was gone. Of  the 47 movies that were there when I started, only 4 were left. The folder was organized into subfolders, each subfolder containing a separate movie and the associated metadata. The file I wanted to delete was the only exception: it was not in a folder.

So in total, MB for WMC somehow deleted 43 folders and one standalone file from one of my media library folders. I have a backup, so nothing is lost. If it's important, that folder was part of a Windows library (Win 7 Pro, 64 bit).

Here are the log files, both server and MB WMC.

Needless to say, I think this is a serious problem. I don't try to remotely delete files very often in MB WMC, and from now on I will NEVER do it. Any idea what happened?

Thanks,

Keith

You had a setup like this?

Folder 1 ->

   Folder 2 ->

   Folder 3 ->

   Video file

   Folder 4 ->

And tried to delete that video file?  If so, that is a  non-standard setup and I can see how it could have been a problem since it would have looked to the system like Folder #1 needed to be deleted.

Yes, that was exactly the setup, which is unusual for me.

Does the delete command delete just the media file, or the folder in which the media file is found? I thought I remembered that it deleted only the file, and that I had to go back in Windows and delete the (now) empty folder later, but maybe I'm wrong.

it used to but people complained about that so we changed it to delete the folder

Wonderful. Now that I know I guess I'll never let it happen again.

Maybe the info box that comes up to ask to confirm the delete could contain that tidbit of information?

Thanks for the clarification.

no we should probably just adjust it to be a little smarter and not delete the whole folder in certain situations

Even better.

Luke, did you see my post over in MB for WMC about searching for actors?

... might also be an idea to include a preview list of (media) files to be deleted in the confirmation dialog - that makes it obvious to the user what really gets removed.
