Raspberry Pi / Client Playback

All,

I've installed Emby on several different Linux installs on my Raspberry Pi 2.

Here is what I am currently doing:

Raspberry Pi 2 running Raspian

External 128GB SSD with transcoded movies

MiniDLNA

Wifi Hotspot

iPad clients in the car use a DLNA client to play back transcoded movies, works with no issues.

Now I've tried to do the same with Emby, and while Emby server does run, playback via the existing aged IOS app, or via the browser always ends up with Emby transcoding the video.  Which of course does not work very well.  Is there some way to disable transcoding altogether?   Or is there a way I can tell Emby not to transcode for particular clients?

My hope would be that I can get this to work.  I could IP the mobile Emby server with the same IP as my home network, with the same user accounts.  The kids then would have a very similiar experience to what they see at home, just with a more limited selection of movies.

Thanks!

Direct stream should work automatically where possible have a look at the transcoding logs to see what the app is requesting. For direct streaming to work you're going to need your videos to be

1. mp4 container

2. h.264 video

3. aac audio

4. no subtitles

5. total bitrate less than what you have selected in the app

6. h.264 level less than that supported by the device, 4.0 is usually a good level to hit

I think at some point there will be a new ios app which will support offline sync. It already works on Windows and Android. Then your kids can just sync whatever they want for the car before you set off, no need for a car server.
