reluctantflux 39 Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 I updated my server last night, and this morning I found the circle play button on the albums. Very nice UI design! I am wondering if other people would like this button to immediately play the album, as the instant mix, shuffle, and add to queue (if something is playing) options are already accessible in the right click menu. This would eliminate one click from getting media playing. Not a big deal, just curious if I was in the minority.
Raff 51 Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Just so I know what I might be voting for - so you are saying that the play button would interrupt anything else going on and play that song, artist, genre or album immediately in whatever the default order is? One of the biggest things (for me) in UX design is consistency - if the play button does that for one element in the music library, it should do that for all the elements in the music library. Would the original options would be moved to the "menu" (not sure how crowded it would get) or should a "play options" widget be added? I do like the idea of fewer clicks to play something, including video, so minus some possible issues I think I am leaning "yest".
Koleckai Silvestri 1154 Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 This UI change came about from recommendations in the testing of the new iOS app.The new app is heavily reliant on the Web Client UI. iOS doesn't support right-click.
reluctantflux 39 Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 I was thinking music, but yeah, page wide makes more sense. Those items are already in the right click menu so it wouldn't increase that menu size. Ios could default the right click menu. Can ios not do long press?
Luke 42077 Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 with or without right click, it's nice having those important functions there because those are the kinds of things people like to do with music. The right click menu should only be considered a bonus because many users will never even realize that it's there. Plus when you're already playing content, Queue will be included in that menu, which is very important for music.
reluctantflux 39 Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 Or even cooler. Press plays the item. Swiping the play icon adds it to the queue!

The whole point of this is to have a quick way of playing something, so it should be achieved in as few clicks as possible. If you want the other functions (which will be used far less than the play option) then you click on the item and then select it in the next page. This came from the new ios music app where that play icon is on every poster in every view and when you click it always just plays the content which is what you expect from a play icon. I also think if you are going to use this it should be rolled out to all media in all views so that it is consistent.
Deathsquirrel 745 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Hadn't played any albums recently but I like this new look. I could absolutely see the play button just straight-up play the content. Add the icon with the three vertical dots to the lower left and put the less-used options under that. Maybe even use those to replace the overlay menu that comes up when you hover your mouse over the icon. This web UI really continues to impress. Nice work!
