Another Format of my Server...

Well guys, I am minutes away from formatting my server... (again)!  Seems like I do this about every 6 months for one reason and one reason only.  To see if I can clear up the bugs that made my MB2 / MB3 / and now EMBY streaming less than reliable.  I am not complaining at all.  The progress that I have seen over those years has been amazing.  I brought all my family and friends to MB3.  I expect nothing but great things in the coming years.  I am going to put EMBY back on this clean install.  One more time.  My setup has gone straight Roku now, and that hasn't worked out so well over the past few weeks.  With a format and a clean install I hope the Roku issues are resolved.  If not I may have to jump ship and try another application.

Well that wasn't very enjoyable!  It appears that whatever was choking the heck out of my system has disappeared with the format.  Haven't added my music library / photos / music videos / or music concerts yet, but my movie and TV collection are in.  EMBY server using .07% CPU / 293 MB of RAM.  Last few weeks CPU was 40+% and at least 1G of RAM!  Don't know, reinstalled Cover Art / Trailers and Box sets.

One direct stream of Roku is going and getting ready to start another.

When I installed EMBY I noticed ffmpeg and ffprobe running.  Not sure what they do or how often they run.  But I didn't whitelist these two before.  They are now.  That's about the only thing I have different this time around.

Time to go see if I can crash the server with the rokus.  Report tomorrow.......

When you first set up Emby and it scans your library, ffmpeg and ffprobe are used to examine the video files to get media info etc.

Where/how did you "blacklist" them ??

They are needed for everyday use when you add new media and also when transcoding,

I use Kaspersky. So anything that I see running, that is EMBY related, gets "white listed" manually. I go in and tell Kaspersky not to scan the processes and allow full system rights. There is no need to scan ffmpeg and I wasn't sure what ffprobe was, but knew it was a process EMBY was calling. Kaspersky gives EMBY low restricted rights, I go in and give it full rights.

I realized last night the only other thing that I didn't do this time was add sharks codex package. Not sure if I will need to install it for non-emby playback, but for now it is not on my system.

Played two streams last night at the same time. 1 transcoded NO ROKU CRASH TO REBOOT and NO SERVER LOCKUPS (that required task manager to kill the "running" server).

Will slowly add the other media types to the library and see how it goes.

You don't need any codec packs with Emby.

Well guess I counted the ole chickens before they were hatched. As stated this was a formatted clean install. Uncertain why EMBY knows that something was recently watched (must be meta hiding in the media folders)? Last night I guess the server and Roku locked up. Looking in the log at that time there are so many errors I dont even know where to start.

EMBY gurus please take a look at attached log. Going between Movies and TV in the web browser is painfully slow (with the revolving circle of pending doom). And to add to the confusion, although the server is running it does not show up in task manager?

I believe the nfo files contain a watched status parameter if you're using them

I don't let Emby store its "goodies" in any of my media folders/drives.  I have a separate SSD where all Cache, images, metadata... etc gets stored...   One reason is exactly what your dealing with, troubleshooting.    You can't truly start fresh with all the old media browser goodies spread all over your media..   and it sucks to search and manually weed it all out.    Though that stuff shouldn't cause you any issues...  Just makes it harder to trouble shoot.    Why don't you just try OS & Emby  none of that other crap, add your media with old media browser info still mixed in your media and see how it goes..  leave Kaspersky and whatever other third party stuff out of the picture for a test.

Well the word that I choose to use is disappointed. I dropped xml for nfo files. Made a few assumptions, one being that nfo was the direction EMBY was going to migrate too. We had a smaller community back in the days, and think there are definitely some growing pains going on lately. But anyway...

I will take pir8radios good feedback and do something extreme here. I wanted a clean install, let EMBY go out and rebuild my catalog. So today I am going to delete everything contained in my media folders minus the media. This will take some time. When finished I will FORMAT once again and only install the server. No plug-ins. Will see what that outcome is.

Formatting a system drive is not the answer any longer. But lets go wipe out gig's of meta and see what happens.....

Thanks for the replies guys, and I am hoping THIS will resolve all my clean server install issues.

OP: When  you say you need to "delete everything contained in your media folders minus the media". This will take some time"...  you're referring to the .XML .NFO .TBN files?

That should be pretty easy to script...pretty easy to do via the Windows Explorer (File Explorer in W8+) also...

Attached is a screenshot of a search for .NFO again against all of the subfolders within the parent folder where my movies are stored.

Let it run, select all, and then delete them.

Do the same for .XML, .TBN, etc.

This is what I'd do if I wanted to kill all of my old metadata. Of course, I could be reading your post totally wrong, and if so, my bad : -  ) .

i think you are reading correctly @@jayTcold   he could search for that stuff and delete it...  there are images stored in with your media too @@skidmarks i dont know if you really want to start fresh or not.. but again I didnt have a choice (in my mind) when i did it..  Plus i wanted all of that stuff on an SSD, it really sped the server up...   good luck, let us know how you made out.  I'm curious myself.

Windows search supports operators paste below in the windows explorer search box then delete all the results for a full clean out think that will get everything but if not you get the idea.

*.jpg OR *.png OR *.xml OR *.nfo OR metadata

Yah guys, I just searched for xml / nfo / extra and so on.  Deleted 1.3G of just meta files.  Was easy but took about an hour or so.  Formatted and install of just server.  The server is rebuilding everything now.  Last try the server only took 41 minutes (which is a red flag for my collection), So far it is 18% and running for well over 3 hours.  I have all of this new meta going to its own directory.  Guess this is the new way of getting a completely virginized  EMBY install!  Will wait to see how the server is doing the morning and then if everything seems good I will add my MP3 collection.  I was pretty sure I had a large MP3 library until I saw pir8ates number...

Thanks again guys...  Shame I had to take these drastic measures, but with all the crash and burning that was going on I pretty much decided there was no other choice.  Update tomorrow on how things worked out!

Not sure what I could possibly be missing? But it must be a lot of something!

Anyway, Server has reached 46% complete on the scan. Looks very promising. Will wait till finished and add the next media folder (mp3's).

Server was happy and very responsive after initial scan was completed.  Then cover art came along.  Any way to tell if it is running in the background still?  Been at it for a few hours now.  I'd uninstall, but I use it so my 3D covers are different from the 2D versions of the same movie.  Auto box sets doesn't care that they are 3D and mixes them all together. With the different cover it makes it easier to go in and remove them from collections (which I cant do right now because the server has slowed to a crawl).

Still haven't added the rest of my media...

Well, Server crashed.  Had to use task manager to kill the server.  This was the same time my Roku froze and rebooted (by itself).  Uninstalled Cover Art.  Cover art had the server slowed to a crawl.  Going to try streaming the same TV show again and see what happens.  If I had any idea what log would help figure this out I would definitely get it uploaded here.  Shame of it is this WAS the problem I was having to make me go thru all of this mess in the first place.

I have a nice sized media collection, but I haven't even loaded the other 1/2 of my media.  This all started about two weeks ago!  Before that time I had no issues with my entire media collection...  Something is astray!  This is a completely clean install.  I have done just about everything I can possibly do on my side.  Format / Delete all my meta files / format again.  No Kaspersky, no codecs?

I don't want to give up on this, will see what happens playing back the same episode.  But I am close..........

Well while watching a different TV show (direct stream) I was going thru my new library fixing movies that got the wrong meta downloaded.  Went to change a primary image for one of the movies and the server did the waiting spinning wheel of doom.  Server froze up and about 30 seconds later the Roku rebooted.  I did notice that active devices box for the Roku stream was switching back and forth between song1 and the episode name.  Song1 is the theme-song.  Not sure what my next move is......  I'm out of ideas!

Might try the P word

I do not believe it EMBY causing the issues, it is responding to some uncommon events within your system and in almost al cases when you have seemingly unexplainable events, it is Anti Vfirus and/or firewall issues or hard ware things such as memory, disk or network controllers...

Since you appear to have a isolated issues, the first thing I would try is to uninstall any and all 3rd party anti virus and firewall software and use windows build in firewall and Anti virus. If you are on a older version (Win-7), down load MS security essentials. Make sure you have this installed on all your windows machines (not just you're server). Then disable your routers firewall settings as well and see how this works..

when still no luck, try uninstalling your NIC drivers and then reinstall the latest versions. (download the latest versions first)

If that also failed: it could be you have a hard disk or memory issue, Do a in-depth memory scan and run Chkdsk /f on all drives in your system. (including any PC's attached to your network). If you have a raid array and you can not run Chkdsk /f on it, use the verification software that comes with your raid..

Finally, make sure you have enough space to cache and hold stuff on the drive that is EMBY is using for its cache.

It's possible that it's hardware related also.
