Roku no longer working with .vob DVD rips

In the past few weeks, presumably after an update, dvds that I've ripped into .vobs under a standard video_ts structure no longer work properly. They have played fine for years, and when I watch them using a Windows client they play fine, so I don't believe there is a problem with the source material. Happening with multiple dvd rips, on multiple Roku players.

The movies can be selected in the Roku client, but do not start at the opening scene. They play some in-between scene for a while, then start to "stutter" going back and forth in between frames like a stuck record. The interface still works, I can back out, but the movies can't be viewed.

 

I am working on getting a log from the Roku now and will update with that when I have it shortly.

OK, some slightly incorrect info above. It does in fact start with the opening scene properly. However, after a few moments, it skips ahead to a totally different scene.

 

In this example I'm posting, I was watching a rip of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. About 4 minutes 4 seconds after I pressed play on the Roku is when it skipped ahead. However, in actual movie time (based on playing it on a computer with VLC and watching the clock) it played normally from 0:00 to about 3 minute 58 seconds, then skipped to about 14 minutes 5 seconds into the movie. It played normally on the computer.

 

I have a log file from the Roku that I will paste, and I also have a short 16 second video clip you can see on Youtube showing the error:

Some more clarification since I don't think what I posted above was totally clear. 

 

*edit* Removed a bit about the timing of the error, VLC was giving me inaccurate timing though the movie played properly. Removed to avoid confusing the issue.

As far as the behavior - the skipping ahead is as shown. However, I have also seen it get stuck and flutter back and forth between two frames of a scene. I cannot easily replicate that however as I don't know specifically when it happens. I observed it when my son complained about a movie he was watching, and I don't know how far into it he was when it occurred.

I just discovered this thread, and I am having a very similar issue with multiple movies when playing using a Roku3 and Roku2XS. The VOBs play fine in VLC, and also play OK using the Emby web interface, and also used to play OK using the old Media Browser under WMC. I believe that I have the latest version of the server and the Roku app. I will try to get a log when I get a chance.

 

The exact symptom is that the movie will skip ahead by a long way (anywhere from a few minutes, or in the worst case, all the way to the trailers). The location and length of the skip is pretty consistent for the same movie. I'm not sure if every movie is doing this, but the majority have it happen at least one time during the movie. If you rewind, it will skip again the next time. If you try to fast forward past the skip point, it jumps ahead including the skip.

Transcoding of folder rip structures has always been considered experimental because it's not natively supported by ffmpeg. Truthfully, i'm surprised you were ever able to seek through them at all.

Well, it's not seeking that's the issue - just straight playing has broken. Start the video, let it play, and then it randomly skips forward. As the other person said, this is a relatively new problem that has occured. I've been able to watch these movies for well over a year or so without problem on the roku until a few weeks ago.

Mike - I'm using handbrake to batch-convert all my .vob video_ts based DVD rips into MKV files. Tedious going even queuing them up in batch mode with several hundred to do, but so far I'm happy with the results.

siredgar: I am converting mine to MP4/H264 using handbrake. I have had different MP4 issues in the past, but I am questioning whether they involved cockpit error on my part. So I will revisit this apparent issue more methodically and see what happens.... THX
