RonNCmale 3 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 I'm currently running Emby for WMC thru ethernet cable from pc (in bedroom) to tv (which is in the living room). I have the xbox 360 remote and can control WMC with it. I would like to try Emby Theater but I'm confused on how to connect. (Video card has DVI connectors and no hdmi), Can a dvi to hdmi adaptor work by running a hdmi cable to tv? Will this carry sound? Can I control emby theater with a remote control in the living room while the pc is in another room? Checking out possibilities prior to windows 10 release. thanks for any help, (Hopes this helps others that may also be looking alternatives) Note: I'm not computer tech, so be gentle.
ebr 16169 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 DVI cannot carry sound. However, the connection from PC to TV should be no different than it is with EMC - unless what you are saying is that you are using a 360 as an extender...
Della Dog 19 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 (edited) DVI cannot carry sound. However, the connection from PC to TV should be no different than it is with EMC - unless what you are saying is that you are using a 360 as an extender... Sure it can, exactly as he describes. My understanding is that HDMI is a glorified DVI, which is partially why it's so problematic. Edited June 11, 2015 by Della Dog
ebr 16169 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Okay, I stand corrected on the sound issue. However, I'm still not understanding why the physical connection to the TV needs to change just because the program in use is...
Deathsquirrel 745 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 You can get a dvi to hdmi adapter to connect the dvi out to your tv or receiver. IF your video card outputs sound over dvi you'll then have sound to the destination, but not all cards support this. You can use a remote control in one room for a pc, or any device, in another room. You'll need a suitably long cord on your infrared sensor or an infrared repeater. If the remote is bluetooth you can likely get a long usb hookup and connect the bluetooth connector to that so it's in the same room as the remote. I wouldn't bother though. Use the pc as your server and use a device in the room with the tv for playback. Emby will run on a lot of different devices.

Better still, if you want to use a single PC with a cable to your remote TV, get yourself a Harmony Ultimate remote. It will communicate with a hub in a cabinet that can control any IR device in the cabinet.
RonNCmale 3 Posted June 11, 2015 Author Posted June 11, 2015 ebr, Yes, I'm currently using the 360 as an extender. Deathsquirrel When you stated "Use the pc as your server and use a device in the room with the tv for playback" are you suggesting the pc be in the same room as the tv?
Deathsquirrel 745 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Deathsquirrel When you stated "Use the pc as your server and use a device in the room with the tv for playback" are you suggesting the pc be in the same room as the tv? In my experience PCs are frustrating devices to have in the living room. Too many strange behaviors. No, I'm suggesting you use an android tv, an xbox, whatever you like that has emby playback. I have my server in the living room right now and can't stand how frustrating its quirks can be. I can't freaking wait to get it out of here. Just waiting on a device that will play all my media without much transcoding. It looks like a race between nvidia shield system updates and the xbox one emby client.
WarrenH 16 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 I've been using a lounge PC for 4 years now and it's also my main house server. The key to a frustration free set up is once it's running properly is to then NOT ttouch it at all. Don't update things unless they're stable releases and add something to your setup, just leave it alone, oh and most importantly DON'T use it as a gaming machine.
RonNCmale 3 Posted June 12, 2015 Author Posted June 12, 2015 Alrighty then, anyone have this set up that is running emby theater from a pc in one room to a tv in another that is able to control emby theater that also has sound and able to control with a remote in front of the tv. Please give me specific instruction on how you made the connections; (cables) ect. note: without the use of WMC due to Windows 10 has discontinued including it. Or any other suggestions on how to make a HTPC. thanks
Scott84Z28 39 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 It depends on how far the PC is from the TV I guess. In my old house I have my HTPC/Server in the basement, and ran the audio/video over a 50ft HDMI cable (which came out of a DVI port on my HTPC). As was mentioned, you have to make sure your video card actually supports audio over DVI, not all do. For the controller, I then used a pair of USB over Ethernet dongles to get my bluetooth receiver closer to the living room (actually had it in the basement ceiling, directly under the couch in the living room). Worked perfectly. If you have a IR received for the controller, then the same idea could be used (USB over Ethernet), and just put the IR receiver near your TV.
ebr 16169 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 If I were you I would just get a Fire TV, Nexus Player or Roku for the bedroom. $99 and you're done. 1
pritch33 5 Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Smart phone app for control if you have a wifi network running in the house. There are plenty to chose from or at least for android.
