How does one configure ET to play back videos w/internal player

Since the below threads are not getting suggestions I thought I would create a new post asking a question and instead of pointing out a problem....

How does one setup Emby Theater to play back videos in general using it's internal player (VLC, correct?) ?

Should the installed defaults be good enough?

Trial and error. Worked for me, took a while to find the best setup.

You're using the internal player, yes?

THANKS!

Does Emby Theater have an internal player?

The internal player is not VLC it is internal. Seems to be using the DirectShow libraries included in DirectX. VLC would be an external player.

To get the internal player running, I installed Emby Theater. It installed a Visual C Runtime and the LAV filters/codecs during that process. It ran videos from the start. Only issue that I have with it today is anything less than 1080p content is shown as a grid made up of 5 px by 5 px blocks. To fix that I have to edit the XML file and turn off the Custom Presenter. Every few versions, someone decides they need to turn this back on for me even though it makes the quality garbage. I don't even think I've updated LAV in the year plus that Theater has been installed. I don't use it much on my PC though as the Web Client is better quality and feature wise.

I've never installed anything like the Shark Codec pack or other items people say they have to install to watch videos.

I guess if you're using different codec packs or trying something outside the box, you would need more configuration.

Okay,

That was the sort of confirmation I was looking for.  ET is not a simple install and hit play.  I can easily get it to work with MPC-HC (or my fav, MPC-BE), but I was under the assumption that ET was an all-in-one package.

Thanks for the clarification.  :D

It is though. It makes sure all of its dependencies are installed. Needs work on quality at lower resolutions but it has an installer that installs everything it needs to play videos on a computer.

Koleckai is correct - I did a HDD format on my htpc to install Mediabrowser 3 and for Emby Theatre I did not install anything other than Theatre, visual C and the LAV filters/codecs it suggested I install alongside and I play from theatre using the internal player. You may be able to get it to work with an external player - but I haven't bothered.

Ok, so I'm confused.

You said you didn't have to install anything other than ET, but then it's followed up with also having to install VisC and LAV filters.  Not trying to sound like an a55, just trying to figure out if it's a simple install of ET ONLY....or ET PLUS MS VisualC  AND LAV Filters?

Sorry for the confusion.....

You only need to install Emby Theatre, it already comes with its own codecs built into it (lav), so once installed and configured you will be up and running

Download the setup for Theater... Run it. It will scan your system and check that the proper Visual C++ Runtimes and LAV are installed. If they aren't the Theater Setup program will download and install  them as part of its process. For the user, it is just one install process.

No problem - as @BATTLEDONKEY and Kolecki says - when you install ET then part of the install is for VisC and LAV filters if the PC doesn't have them

So I have done this a few times on a fresh install of Win7, but still no dice.  I only install SP1 on Win7 and nothing further.  I do notice when installing ET that it does install additional components, so I'm not sure why it doesn't work.

....so once installed and configured you will be up and running

What needs to be configured?  There does not appear to be many options for trying to make a video play.  Is there a guide on setting up ET.  I've searched but cannot find anything beyond simply installing the program.

Hi, maybe a stupid question, but did you install Emby server?

I don't seem to see you mentioning it anywhere.

Emby Theatre is a client and needs the server as a backend.

Could that be the problem?

Hi Ernst.  Thanks for the suggestion, but yes, I have been using the server for over 3 years now ever since I converted over from MB2.

When you select an item in Theater and press the play button what happens? Describe what isn't playing.

Babgvant has submitted a pull request with some fixes for the video player. I will merge in and push an update soon
