Some problems/questions

This is my second day with Emby. It looks good for the few moments it is actually running. But haven't got anything more than that. Is Emby considered to be stable on Ubuntu?

Maybe (probably) i'm doing things wrong, or Emby is too much beta to actually use. But i hope i'm doing things wrong, because it really looks good =)

As I said i've had it running for a short while, and during that time i had these problems:

1. Should the progressbar of a task update? Not for me, had to update with F5 or go to another page and back again.

2. Almost every time when i selected the Server page i saw the url change, but the page didn't. Had to do a F5 refresh.

3. After a while the server seems to stop logging to the log file, even though it was running and i could navigate the pages.

4. If the media library scanner crasched, i had a permission issue, and i tried to stop it and try again. It got stuck at Stopping. Had to restart Emby.

5. It would be nice of the logs were accessible from the interface. And nice if errors showed up without having to enable all debug logging. Now you have to fail first, enable logging, and try again. And having debug logging in all the time would create very big logs over time.

6. It would be nice to be able to restart the service from the web interface.

And after all that, the last thing that happened was that when i tried to select the Library section on the server, i got thrown out to the Login page. The first login attempt after that, clicking on my user, always shows an error message. Wrong password or something. But the second click worked, and i was logged in. But still thrown out when i selected Library section.

Efter a few attempts i thought i should try and restart Emby to se if it would start working again.

Now it wont start at all. Trying "sudo service mediabrowser start", like i've done every time, but nothing happend. And i don't even get a log file so i have no clue what the problem is.

The only thing that shows up is "Removing stale /var/run/mediabrowser.pid", but that is not much help.

I really would like to start using Emby. And i'm not afraid to test things and try to help and find bugs. But i need to be useful atleast like 80-90% of the time, not only a constant struggle to get things working.

But, since it is my second day with Emby i'm probably doing things the wrong way. I hope someone has the time to try to help me =)

Thank you for your help.

Thanks for the feedback and for trying emby.

I will try and answer most question, but some you might have to wait for Luke or one of the other developers to get back to you.

3. Log files get rotated. Are you sure you are reading the right file?

4. Yes this is normal. We are trying to make it more clear about the permissions so that individuals avoid this to begin with.

5. Logs are accessible via the interface: Should be under advance -> help -> logs (:8096/mediabrowser/dashboard/support.html)

There should be an error in /var/log/sys indicating why mediabrowser wasn't successful at running.

Thank you for your reply.

I do a tail -f /var/log/syslog, but don't get anything there when i try to start mediabrowser.

I'm pretty sure that i was reading the right log file, because I had it open and suddenly it stopped logging. But now I cant verify that because nothing will start =)

Didn't find the logs in the interface, only the paths to the logs. But will check if I can get things to start again. But since i have no clue on what is failing now it is kind of hard =) Need to figure out why mono wont start. Is there any other way to get the potential error output? Maybe edit some script, redirect it somewhere else? Or is it possible to try to start everything manual so i get the error in the console?

Yeah you can run the start command yourself :

exec /sbin/setuser mediabrowser mono /opt/emby/MediaBrowser.Server.Mono.exe -programdata /var/lib/mediabrowser

Did you change the user that mediabrowser is run under?

Thank you. Now it is running again. Much easier to fix a problem when you see the output =) But too bad, or strange, that i needed to start it manually to see the output. Would have been good if it was shown in some log.

Nice, now i found the logs. (But maybe a strange place to place them in the Help section? For me a more logical place would be the Server section.)

But it would be really nice in some way to filter the log and only see the errors/problems. Maybe even without having to enable all debug logging.

Besides 1 and 2 I will try to get things working now. But I also upgraded to the latest version.

I'm sorry if this maybe is in some wiki or something, but what would be the proper way to identify why posters and such is not downloaded for a movie? I now see that i have many movies that haven't got any posters.

I'm really looking forward to learn more about Emby, this looks really cool. It would make my transition to Kodi much easier when a central library is available. (If MythTV gets support also maybe i can throw away MythTv frontend also and only use Kodi/Emby=))

Sometimes the posters could be missing because the metadata manager hasn't gotten around to scrapping your whole library. You can use the metadata manager within emby to force an refresh.

Logs can also be found under /var/lib/mediabrowser if I'm not mistaken.

If I do a refresh in the Metadata manager, is there some where I can see the progress of the refresh? Nothing seems to be happening besides a spinning "thing"?

If I select a movie that don't have any images and edit that movie in the metadata manager and select identify and do a search without changing anything I only get one hit, and it does have images. So if there isn't any problem with my naming of the movies added I don't know why the inormation isn't downloaded automatically?

That's a good question, and I'm not 100 percent certain because I'm not part of the Dev team that takes care of that. I believe this question is better direct to the general support forum
