Hi all !

here is my situation

I have a lot of blu-ray rips stored on my Nas. I rip them myself with MakeMkv and do not recompress the files to keep optimum quality.

I have a pretty fast gigbit router and devices galore to play the files but the key componenent i'm missing is a dedicated server.

I was thinking of going with an i7 NUC with at least 16 gigs of ram, for the size of it and the low power consuption.

Question 1

Obviously... is the NUC a good choice to be able to transcode at the most 3-4 simultaneous streams.

I guess about half my rips are vc1 and the other half h264 ... with the odd mpeg2 ...

Question 2

I did read somewhere that vc1 only transcodes via ffmpeg on only 1 core .. will that be a problem considering the NUC im looking to buy ?

would it be better to bite the bullet and recompress them as h264 ?

Question 3

In my rips i keep the original PGS subtitles and that obvioulsy triggers transcoding when i play them.

Again... will that be an issue down the line or should i painstakingly switch them to srt files ?

i'm still fairly new to all this, so any help and opinions are most welcome !

thanks !
