Is it possible to add a user setting to force downmixing the audio track to AAC2.0?  Or even adding an option to the player would be helpful.

Most of the devices that stream to are not compatible with the AC3 5.1 tracks (stereo only) and often result in garbled sound without downmixing.

Thanks

What devices?

Asus Chromebox using the web browser to play movies and live tv seems to have some issues with AC3/5.1 audio tracks with garbled sound.  If i switch to a stereo track or watch an AAC encode the sound is fine.

I tried it on other devices without any audio issues: Win/Chrome, Ipad/Safari, Roku.

This is the first problem in over a year I've had with playback on the Chromebox but I cannot rule out an ChromeOS update having broken something and not an Emby issue..

The server transcodes the audio though right? I have not added ac3 as direct playable to the web client.

Well, I'm not sure if it transcodes the audio... I can switch the audio tracks on the fly whereas when i switch the bitrate settings it will restart the video as if it is restarting the transcode from scratch. I'm not sure if that really means anything or not..

If there was a user setting to force all audio to transcode to AAC that would be helpful. Kindof like how you can set the max bitrate to users, I'm assuming it adjusts the transcoding maxbitrate to whatever the setting support.  Reducing the sound quality overhead would probably help video streaming quality.
