Frequent crashes/hangups with latest (264) WMC Client

Hi Ebr,

I'm at work right now but will will grab logs when I get home, but I think I'm reaching a point where the WMC client has become less stable for me across multiple HTPCs. I am running the latest Emby beta (264) and Server beta (3.0.5588.0) I feel like at one point in time it was much more stable and faster. I should add these issues have been happening for a while so it's not specific to the latest beta (I can see how my title may suggest that, but can't see how to edit that).

Specifically let me explain the situation as best as I can sans logs and I will add them later tonight.

I have 4+ HTPC clients running WMC with another desktop (always on) running MB Server. Most of my libraries are pointing to shares located on my Unraid server.

I also have recently ripped movies/tv shows dumped into a single folder and library which is located on one of the drives on my desktop (MB Server) machine.

For the most part things behave normal when going into libraries who have the content stored on the Unraid. But when I try to navigate to the library whose files are on my desktop PC I have run into issues (very slow response times, incorrect images, invalid application errors, mediabrowser has stopped error message, "No Items" message showing sometimes when drilling down into the folder) etc.

It has gotten worse and it does this across all of my HTPCs. The desktop PC that has the library located on it behaves fine (but I'll confirm) and seemed very responsive.

I only have anti-virus on the desktop PC (Security Essentials). I have the default settings for Windows Firewall (haven't tested turning it off - would I do that on the client or server or both?). I have made sure I used UNC path for this library and permissions are correct (I think I gave everyone read/write). I don't think it's a hardware/network issue as I never have had issues playing back any of this content outside of Emby/WMC on the client pc's, but if you have any tests to suggest I'm happy to do so. Also I have no issues like this (loading images, playback) from other clients such as the web or android. Everything is loaded correctly and responsive.

Emby is configured to auto find the Server and I can confirm the IP address is correct in the logs, so it's not pointing to an obsolete server IP for example.

One thing I did try last night was deleting the ImageCache folder on one of my HTPCs and that seemed to fix for now the issue of incorrect images in that folder but I need to do more testing on the performance side of things.

The other things I was thinking is that in this folder I have mixed content that includes movies, tv series, tv series with empty folders, ebooks and other random folders (fonts, applications, etc). Could those be causing an issue, as I know some changes were made to mixed content a while back.

I will get some logs of trying to navigate into that folder as well as from the server, but anything you suggest I should test or other information I can provide?

I greatly appreciate all your work over the years, so I wanted to make sure I say that and I love the application as a whole as WMC is really our platform for our whole house so I'd love for it to be working well.

Thanks

Just fyi 264 is a dev release not beta but you said these issues weren't necessarily related to this version.

Only thing i would say at this point is be sure to test with Chocolate as a base line.

You sure it's marked right then? I was prompted to update to the latest beta the other night (.264)

Hi Ebr,

Yes I only use Chocolate on all of my HTPCs so all testing and results I've seen have only been with Chocolate. As Techywarrior said I do recall 264 showing up now as a beta (I know I don't have dev level selected).

Wow, you're right.  I did not mean for that to be the case.  Oh well.  Its done now.  At least it will get more testing.

Hi Ebr,

here are a few logs one for the server and two instances from the same client. In the older of the two client logs, it ended up showing the "no items" screen when entering the folder. The second log what happened was that it was very slow to load/enter the folder and when loaded some of the banner images were incorrect for a given tv series. Looking quickly at the log I do see many errors.

I had no problem navigating to the folder from the client HTPC and playing a file and it pinged fine as well.

One thing I did check is that for the permissions on that folder it is set to share to the homegroup user (read) and to my user account "RD" read/write. Do I need to add the everyone user?

Lastly wanted to add, my client HTPCs are connected hard wire cat6. I can sustain 50-90MB/s transfers to/from the desktop PC, so I don't think it is a networking issue. Also using WMC client on the server has no problems (fast scrolling/navigation/proper images load). I wonder if it is a permission/security issue specific to the folder in which this library resides.

Any ideas as to the cause and/or what type of troubleshooting steps I should take?

We'll probably need to call Luke in but it is either a new server bug or a problem with the item structure (which still probably means there is a bug).

Ok thank you Ebr.

Hi Ebr, Luke

I disabled genres per Lukes suggestion but it was still slow or not properly loading.

I then uninstalled and installed 262 and that seems to be working much better. I can get logs but wanted to let you know. I confirmed this on two PC's.

how do you disable genres?

I believe it's under the Advanced settings when you go into the Config settings within the Emby WMC app

It would be under legacy browsing which you must have enabled.
