farside847 39 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Hi there, I have a new issue that I hope you guys can help with. I have been using the latest stable windows server for about a year now and had great results. Recently, I have had 2 server crashes that I can not explain. When the server crashes I can not go to the http://localhost:8096/web/dashboard.html - it just spins. I can "restart" the server from the tray icon, but I still can not get to the server page. The roku app can not access the server when this happens too. It seems to happen when I am not streaming. I dont even notice until I go to use it and it cant talk to the server. I do not remember changing any settings for a long time. To fix it, I need to reboot my machine, and then everything works again. The happened the first time last week and I thought it was a fluke, but it happened again last night. I will attach the logs for review. I think the smaller file is from when I rebooted the server. I hope it provides the info you need to help me troubleshoot. thanks in advance for your help! logs.zip
tphillip1120 2 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Is your Server Windows based? If so the first thing I would do is check to see if your computer has taken an Windows Updates lately. I find that Microsoft's Security patches sometimes play havoc with other software and am very selective as to what I allow Windows Update to install. This might not be an Emby problem at all although it could be. When was the last time it seemed to work correctly? Check to see what Windows Security Updates have been updated and try removing them or restore your computer to an earlier time before the updates occurred. This is the first thing I would try when having issues. You can also check your Windows Event Log as it might hold some clues as to what is going on. You check these things while someone in looking at your Emby log.
farside847 39 Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 Thank you for your reply! Yes, Windows server Version 3.0.5572.0 - I double checked, and I have windows updates disabled. No updates have been installed for a year. When the "crash" happens, the server can still access the internet via web browser, and the windows shares are still accessible over the network. I run Kodi on another device that still can play files shared on the server. Super weird.
JeremyFr79 228 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Well NOT updating for a year can cause as much if not more havoc, than updates. I'd make sure Windows is fully up to date as 8.1 has had a lot of patching done over the last year and you may be running into an issue where Emby is trying to use something that is now patched and causing the issue because you haven't patched it. Also make sure your device drivers are up to date as well.
farside847 39 Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 After digging through the logs more, I noticed that the server application attempted to restart itself at 11:19pm (while I was asleep). While shutting down it had this error: 2015-04-08 21:19:06.4506 Error - HttpServer: Error in HttpConnection.BeginReadRequest. ConnectionId: 2df83a0d22264d1280ffb0311553d78f Then, when it started back up it had this error: 2015-04-08 21:19:33.5322 Error - ServerManager: The http server is unable to start due to a Socket error. This can occasionally happen when the operating system takes longer than usual to release the IP bindings from the previous session. This can take up to five minutes. Please try waiting or rebooting the system. This seems to be the report of the crash, but to be honest I am not sure what to make of it. I didnt even know the server application restart itself at night. It seemed to work fine before the restart. I watched a show at 7pm and went to bed. The next morning the server app was unresponsive. I can update windows as suggested and see if it makes it more stable, but I hate doing this once I get the system all set up. It seems to cause issues sometimes and I like to keep things clean. Do you guys really think this will solve my issue? thanks again!
JeremyFr79 228 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 You have to remember updates typically fix all sorts of things more than they mess something up. I keep all my machines up to date and hardly ever if at all have issues.
speechles 2055 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 (edited) farside847 You can keep the windows updates disabled, that is fine, it isn't your issue. Your error suggests you have the server automatically update itself when idle. Uncheck the option for this. By default the box is checked. Try manually updating from now on and watch the server as it updates. I disable automatic updates for this reason too. Edited April 10, 2015 by speechles 1
ebr 16185 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I'll bet you $1 you have a stranded ffmpeg process on the machine (or did when it tried to restart). 1

I think we are on the right path! Dove back into the log (damn its big) and saw that it checked for any app updates, didnt find any. Then it checked for any plugin updates and found one, and it threw an error with the restart command. 2015-04-08 21:01:30.8123 Info - App: IntervalTrigger fired for task: Check for application updates 2015-04-08 21:01:30.8123 Info - App: IntervalTrigger fired for task: Check for plugin updates 2015-04-08 21:01:30.8123 Info - App: Queueing task PluginUpdateTask 2015-04-08 21:01:30.8123 Info - App: Queueing task SystemUpdateTask 2015-04-08 21:04:03.5834 Info - App: Executing Check for application updates 2015-04-08 21:04:03.5834 Debug - App: No application update available. 2015-04-08 21:04:03.5834 Info - App: Check for application updates Completed after 0 minute(s) and 0 seconds 2015-04-08 21:04:03.6770 Info - App: Executing Check for plugin updates 2015-04-08 21:04:03.6926 Info - App: HttpClientManager.GetTempFileResponse url: http://www.mb3admin.com/admin/service/packageFiles/moviethemesongs.dll_1.1.1.2.exe 2015-04-08 21:04:04.2074 Info - App: Plugin updated: Movie Theme Songs 1.1.1.2 Release 2015-04-08 21:04:04.2542 Info - App: Check for plugin updates Completed after 0 minute(s) and 0 seconds 2015-04-08 21:04:24.3470 Error - SessionManager: Error in SendRestartRequiredNotification. *** Error Report *** Command line: C:\Users\neat\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\System\MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe The operation has timed out Also, at 9pm it seems to want to do alot of things all at once: check for updates, check for plugings, refresh catalog, update tv channels, clean up logs, convert media, sync, download channel details... Geesh. I think maybe spacing these out a bit might help (I kept them at default FWIW). Since so many things were happening all at once it doesn't surprise me that something stepped on someone elses toes. I'll bet you $1 you have a stranded ffmpeg process on the machine (or did when it tried to restart). Could be, would these show up in the windows task manager under processes? Since the suggested fix would entail manual updates from now on I can check for them before I let it install. thanks guys! Edited April 10, 2015 by farside847
ebr 16185 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Yes, they would show in the processes tab of task manager.
