playing mkv subs

I searched but couldn't find a specific answer.

Playing softcoded subs on mkvs seems to be a little hit and miss so suspect I am doing something wrong. I am new to roku.

The subtitles play fine on VLC and the first time I tried to play them on roku, worked it out through the audio and subtitle menu on the episode. That series all played fine, setting the subtitles and language each time I watched an episode.

However doing exactly the same thing in a different series gets the japanese audio but no subtitles. I have confimred they exist through VLC.

I get three menu options inside the subtiles, one none and two "eng". This is the same as what I got in the earlier series.

I tried using captions once the epsiode was playing, but they only work with the english audio option.

What might I be missing?

i'm having a hard time following. you're saying certain subs only work when English audio is playing?

Try changing this setting to "ON" in the Roku settings menu?  I believe it is set to instant replay by default.
