Roku Thumbnail Plugin problem

The content in my library is made up of several different types of files with different codecs.  Very little of my content has working thumbnails on Roku.  I'm wondering what's the best file format and codec for video files for the thumbnail plugin to work?

whatever the roku device can play natively without transcoding. generally that's mp4 files with h264 video and aac audio
