I had the same original thought when I first upgraded to Windows 8! Adding in the 8.1 update helps a lot - at least you get the automatic desktop view back!

 

Now that I am accustomed to moving around the interface I like the way the OS runs in general. It seems faster to me overall. I was sad to lose the start button, but it's a trade off if you want Windows 8.

 

Like CBers mentioned above, I now can't wait for Windows 10 to be released!

Did the free update to 8.1. Thanks guys! I feel much better now I can see the desktop again.

 

I just want to build apps for Xbox and windows, it was nessessary.

Damn it! All the sharing permissions are completely f'd up.

 

I was finally able to see the shared file system from my win 7 machine, but can not access any of the bloody files.

 

It keeps asking for permissions from admins on my win 8 machine.

 

Problem is that all the privileges have been set to share with everyone on the network from the win 7 machine.

 

This is gonna be a headache I can already feel it.

I love Windows 8. I am not sure what is confusing about it. WMC is much faster and has less bugs on it plus the OS uses les ram and is much snappier than Win 7.

I also like "8" (run an 8.1 server)

 

I find it snappy and like the improved copy/paste screen. I never upgrade, always clean install (with upgrade licenses ) however I didn't notice any specific issue with shares. I have had an issue in w7/w8/w8.1 where I couldn't easily share an entire drive (with the exception of the virtual drive flexraid creates)

 

I didn't like it as much before the 8.1 upgrade

Oh. I was thought you were talking text copy/paste. Not, moving files.

 

I still prefer Teracopy over the built in windows dialog. Teracopy performs sensible queuing of multiple copy jobs.

Guys I am having major problems! Maybe one of you guys can help me.

 

My server is still running Windows seven.

 

All my drives are shared to the network.

 

On my new win 8 install I can not access the drives. There are permission issues.

 

I tried un-sharing and re-sharing but no go.

 

I enabled the home group but no go.

 

What do you guys think the problem might be.

I tried that.

 

Funny thing is that any sub folder in my drives on my win seven machine is now showing an error: "this folder can not be shared".

 

I thought it was my win 8 install but now I am thinking it is the win seven machine.

This may not be your problem - but it's worth knowing about.

 

You can configure Windows credentials on your Win8 machine so it remembers username/password information for connecting to other machines on your network.

Also on your Win7 machine it's possible that you've lost ownership of the folders you're trying to share - read this: Take Ownership of a File or Folder

 

The problem may also have something to do with password protected sharing - this may help: Password Protected Sharing - Turn On or Off in Windows 7
