Control HTPC music/video from WinPhone 8 client

I have a rackmount HTPC that is connected to TVs throughout the house as well as whole house audio.  I'd like to be able to use the windows 8 or Windows Phone 8 to dial up and play music, or videos on the HTPC.  This would allow me to basically use any of my devices to control entertainment throughout the home.  I'd like the music selection and playing to basically operate just like it does on my Windows Phone 8.  I don't want to have to have my TV on to play music.

Most clients support remote play now.  You can definitely do this with the web client.

Is this feature available yet for Windows Phone 8?  I select remote and I just get a blank screen.

You will get a black screen if you select remote and nothing is already playing. Try navigating to an item on the phone, then swipe up from the bottom (or press ... ) then select 'play on...'. You should now see your MB3 client list. Select which one you would like the item to play on.

I do not see play on as an option.

What version are you running, and which collection are you looking at? Music is not yet working, but will be coming in a future update.

Ahh, yes, I'm looking at music.  Thanks.  I look forward to future updates.

Excellent App!

Came here to raise the potential bug of the remote not working - however, have resolved one issue following the discussion (selecting media and then "play on...")...

I can now start shows etc from the windows phone app to play on my HTPC clients! Excellent!

However, once started I do get no options to pause, stop, etc. (any remote controls) - it takes me back to the "remote" interface with a blank screen as TheRealScottR originally mentions (the "MEDIABROWSER - REMOTE" page).

I guess, when fully working, this page should display your typical remote control options (play, pause, rewind, fforward, stop, volume, etc. etc.)?

A request for this (if possible) - would it be/is it possible to put the mobile app into "Remote Mode" (until deactivated) - making it a purely companion remote control device - allowing you to browse the librarys, read the meta, etc. and having quick access to the remote control. (Avoiding any need to swipe up, "play on..." each time)

Anyway, again - thank you to the developers! An excellent, quick, sleek and smooth app that is a pleasure to use on Windows Phone! Many kudos to the whole MB3 community - a vast improvement over MB2!

@abstract: thanks for the feedback, I'll take that into consideration.

If this is in the trial mode you can only control the web interface, the paid app can control the others.

Thanks Scott. I'm on the paid app - happy to contribute to MediaBrowser development (MCE serves our whole home's media on a range of devices).

It looks then that I have some trial limitations in place - I'll make sure I've reset the phone (only needed to around 4 times in 10 months of having it!) and let you know if there is no joy. Assumed this might have just been a beta/in-dev/to-come functionality..,

Brilliant work to the whole team!

I just bought the app for my Windows Phone 8 device hoping that I would be able to remotely control my Roku 2 playing music.

It also doesn't seem to work when remotely playing videos either because none of the buttons play/pause etc. seems to register on the phone.

So this feature should be arriving in an update soon?

What the app can control is dependent upon the app you wish to control. In this case, the Roku doesn't support being controlled, so the phone app won't be able to.

When you say the buttons aren't working, what are you trying to remote control?

The on screen visual buttons that show up on the MB3 app when playing a video thru Roku do not work even though it shows the poster for the currently playing video.

I understand now that the problem is the inability to remotely control the Roku with music or video.

Will there be any way to control the Roku in the future?

That's something you'd need to ask in the Roku specific forum.
