Windows Server Crashing

Hi,

For the past month or two when i open a stream the server crashes, whether that is a Chromecast stream or on my tablet or phone. and i have to reboot the server manually. sometimes it will crash during the launch of the video, sometimes half way through a video or sometimes on the 2nd or 3rd video. there is only 1 user (me) that uses mediabrowser.

System specs

Intel Core i7 860 2.8ghz

8gb ram (4x2gb)

Windows WHS2011 64bit

Media Browser server v3.0.5490.2 (Media Browser is up to date)

I have attached 3 logs around the time or the system crashing

http://paste2.org/a4HUDIpt

http://paste2.org/cJVUYhkB

http://paste2.org/cbjYCaM1

Any help would be appreciated

Also to note, this drove me nuts so last night (13/01/14) I reinstalled WHS2011 fresh and its drivers, chrome and mediabrowser that's all that's been installed

I don't think you got the right log because I don't see any playback or crashes.

Clear out your logs, re start the server and cause the issue and then you'll know you have the right log file.

When you say "crashed" what, exactly, do you mean?  The server program stops running?  Do you get a message or dialog box?

I see lots of errors in metadata files but no critical errors from the server and I don't see the server shutting down.  Is there anything in the Windows Event log?

BSOD. however it seems to be a different one each time, since I'm easily able to replicate the issue I can do it a couple of times and get the error code. Also i checked through the event viewer logs, and there where only a couple dozen entries (since windows has only just been reinstalled) and i cant find anything.

Sounds like a hardware problem

Run a memory diagnostic, preferably memtest86, or something similar, also run sfcscan in windows verify all windows files are no corrupt.

So i have been doing some testing and still doing some more, but I may have found the issue. It appears when streaming a video im using 90% of my cpu (2.8ghz 4core + 4 hypertreading, with all cores at 90%) and the cpu is getting super hot (measured with speedfan) I loaded a video on my phone, and within minutes my cpu started hitting 100c, i had no idea it was getting this hot, the pc literally sits in the corner with just a power and ethernet cord connected. i might have to fit an aftermarket cooler to it. I have been using the 1 video file for my testing and the room temp is a little colder today as i havent been able to make it BSOD. still running the suggested diagnositics, even though its a fresh install im still doing the system check. I will keep you posted.

ok i ran the built in windows memory scanner as my server doesnt have a dvd drive and i dont have any spare flash drives on hand, I also ran the SFC scan and that also checked out. so im going to stick with my overheating theory and see i can i put an after market cpu cooler on it and see how it goes, if you have any other ideas i will still have a look.

You are probably spot on with the overheating issue, the stock cooler "should" be ok. If not it might be time to re-apply the thermal paste + cooler again. Although and after market cooler never hurts :)

Make sure your video drivers are up to date as well.  I'd say 90% of BSODs I've seen are caused by video drivers.

Overheating usually won't cause BSOD's since all modern CPU's have thermal throttling.  Also Speedfan can sometimes report off by up to 15 degrees from actual temps.

Just remembering that there is no display connected to the server, would that still cause the BSOD? I haven't installed any drivers on it as the graphics card is a spare I pulled out of an old pc and was only used to set it up, and recently identifying when it BSOD.

I would make sure you install proper drivers for it.

Do you have any dump files in the C:\WIndows\minidump folder? If so, you can post them and we can run a debug to find out the culprit of the BSOD.

I installed 2 more 120mm case fans and reversed the way the air flows through the case (intake at the back and top (right near the cpu) (3 intakes near cpu) and 1 exhaust at the front, so hopefully that will keep it cool enough.

I will go ahead and try find the Nvidia Drivers and install them

Update: streamed a video with the new fans in, cpu was at 80c and it crashed again. I have a minidump file this time, how to i go about uploading it? im unfamiliar with .DMP files

just use something like dropbox and then supply the link to the file.

Another test is to try install the server on another machine and see if it happens.

I'm not able to read that dump file but I'll bet you $1 it is the video driver.

Agreed, nVidia is notorious for BSOD's, Matter of fact the reason so many people hated Vista when it first came out was actually due to badly written drivers for nVidia cards causing a mountain of BSOD's

80C is very hot for that CPU. Depending how you are monitoring the temperature, one core might be exceeding the temperature threshold and causing the server to reach an overheat condition where it wants to shutdown. It sounds like the heat paste between the cooler and CPU may not be applied correctly. That CPU should be running at least 20C cooler under load.

I also just remembered.. go to Windows Event Viewer and it should have a log of what caused the system to crash by event ID.

I have installed the Nvidia Drivers and so far its been ok, I will do some more testing when i get home from work, hopefully this fixes this, as mediabrowser is awesome, besides giving someone the best answer is there also a Kudo's system that i can give you all for your help?

Well just went to stream another video and it crashed. So now I'm completely clueless on the cause. Any more ideas?

Have you tried running a cpu test program like prime95? link to 64 bit version : http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=205

I would try running that and see if it crashes, if you need to confirm degrees with another software if you don't trust speedfan, i would recommend CoreTemp link to 64bit : http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/php/download.php?id=3

Both of these are able to run from the folder you extract so no need to install anything, if the server still crashes you know you either have a cooling issue or maybe som busted ram etc. (you can choose what to test with prime)
