Flip_5 1 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) I am trying to connect a Roku for my parents to share my movie collection. I am having some troubles getting if connected properly. I have 3 users on my account, me, Mom&Dad, and Kids. Along with other devices, I have 2 Roku devices, a Roku3 (4200x) on my network, which works fine, and my parents Roku Streaming Stick (3500R) connected from their remote network. The Roku at my parents house will not show a login screen, it automatically defaults to Mom&Dad. Mom&Dad is the only user linked to Media Browser Connect with my username, showing the little cloud icon. (Do I have to put my username on all 3 users?) If I connect manually with my external ip, it will show the login screen. However when I click sign out, it will automatically default to Mom&Dad. In the list of devices on my server, there is only one Roku device listed, Roku 3. However it seems to show activity from either Roku device. I have attached the latest server log, and if necessary, I will get a client log this weekend when I can get over to my parents to enable logging. Let me know what other info you need from me, Flip Edited January 8, 2015 by Flip_5
ginjaninja 605 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Can you connect via a web browser from the foreign network, browse library and play files? - is it a network config issue...what URL are you connecting on? Try the other roku on the other network... - is it a roku device compatability issue... are you using an MBC connect account, are you using the same or different mbc account from local network...probably best to create a specific MBC (MediaBrowserConnect) User account for Mom&Dad if havent already....and use that when registering roku on foreign network... please keep screenshots and notes of gotchas/config when youve got it working and ill update the install instructions.
ebr 16169 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 That is how MB Connect is designed to work. The Connect user doesn't know about the local user - it just automatically directs them to it. That way you don't have a double log-in sequence. If you wish to have the device used remotely with access to all the users, then just point it to your server directly.
Flip_5 1 Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) I originally tried setting up a second MBC connect account for Mom&Dad, for use on the remote network, but that wasn't working, so I tried removing the MBC connect from all 3 users, and only added my main MBC account to the Mom&Dad user. I'm not concerned about MBC connect for myself, my parents however need it to just work, and it does mostly, except for the fact that it doesn't give the option to select a User. It will only login to Mom&Dad, unless I manually connect to the server using my public ip. The only problem with this is that it only works once. I can't sign out and then select a different user. When I click sign out, it automatically reconnect as Mom&Dad. Remember user is set to "No" on the roku client. Edited January 8, 2015 by Flip_5
Flip_5 1 Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 OK, so using MB connect, it's working as designed... At least I know I wasn't setting it up wrong. How do I get it to "remember" to manually connect using the external ip?
Solution ebr 16169 Posted January 8, 2015 Solution Posted January 8, 2015 I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that question but Luke should be able to help when he gets a chance. Connect is designed for just the situation you have - Mom and dad sharing your server and it is not exposing the users for the very reason you stated - so that it is extremely simple for them to access. So, it is designed so that your mom and dad's roku always sees just their content (when logged into the mom and dad connect account). I guess, you are wanting your kids (or maybe you) to also be able to access your accounts from their Roku? If that is the case, I would take Connect out of the picture entirely and just put your remote server address in as the server to always connect to from their machine. 1
Flip_5 1 Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 I'll do that next time I get over there. I'm guessing when I first set it up, I used the pin method to connect, and now I have to delete that connection and just put in a manual connection to the server. Thanks! 1
Luke 42077 Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 It will remember the login as long as you don't disable that in settings. However since you have multiple external accounts on the same device you will probably need to disable it. When that happens the app should open right up to the login screen if there is only one server, or to server selection if there are multiple
