FTP access for non NAS devices attached to routers.

This might sound dumb but I have a USB 3.0 external HD connected go my Asus AC68U router that has all my shows and movies. It uses Asus ddns servers. I would like to know if there's a way (maybe future) that I can connect to it without having my PC running the media app. For example, using android es file explorer I can add my credentials for ftp and my HD pops up. But since I have the show (episodes) files in the naming convention so media browsers attaches correct info, I have no idea what episode I'm clicking on. Haha. Thank you.
