I'm even fond of some of the classic Ealing comedies of the 40's and 50's., the funnier the better...

21 & Over

Dish Dogs (may be too much thinking)

Toys (may be too much of a drama though)

Out Cold

Strange Brew

Warm Bodies

Young Einstein

American Outlaws

Kung Fu Hustle

Wasabi

I tried to guess what you may have seen already and left out a lot of obvious movies from the last 20 years assuming you had seen them already. You may have seen a lot of these as well though. Pretty tough without knowing what you have seen :)

Hopefully there are a few in the list you haven't at least.

Yeah seen a lot of those... but also reminded me of a few I saw originally in the cinema and have never seen since. Condorman if I recall was the one with Michael Crawford as the cartoonist drawn into a world of spies... Loved that film as a kid and never seen it since the early 80's... Now I really want to see it... I'll probably think it's stupid now... and that's part of the problem of rewatching old movies you loved as a kid... It's like the old saying, never meet your childhood heroes, or never drive your childhood dream car... it will only end in disappointment.

Left the ones above that I've never seen or never heard of. The rest I either have or have seen.. Will try and check a few out. Mind you, is Toys the one with Robin Williams in, if so I've seen it... or is the one with the toy aliens and soldiers made with top secret chips that believe their programming and star a war in the neighbourhood. Young Einstein I've heard of but never seen... classic Aussie 80's spoof movie if I recall.

But tonights offering whilst waiting for sleep is Peguins of Madagascar... So glad they have a movie of their own, they were the only decent thing in those damn Madagascar movies.... But not as good as the MINIONS!!!   :)

Yes, that's the one. It took me about 15 years to find the DVD because Disney refused to release it. They finally did as a special Disney Movie Club exclusive. Luckily I was in the club so I immediately bought it :)

Toys is the one with Robin Williams and LL Cool J. Also had Joan Cussack if I recall. It's the one where he inherits the toy factory after his father dies.

I'd highly recommend the movies left on that list though.

21 & Over is a fun "college kids have a night out" but with some nice twists over the traditional.

Out Cold is probably the only movie I know of where a guy wakes up to a polar bear licking his junk... I mean, come on. Don't you just want to see what other crazy shit was in that movie now?

Strange Brew is old school Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas.

Warm Bodies is the best Zombie love movie ever. Does what Shawn of the Dead did with Zombie comedy.

Wasabi is French action movie with Jean Reno. Funny, way over the top action, classic Luc Besson.

American Outlaws is a decent cowboys action movie. Has some good casting.

Kung Fu Hustle is a Chinese Steven Chow action comedy. A lot of his usual stuff.

Wow, want to watch a bad movie? Robocop (2014). Sure, the CGI is much better then the stop motion models used in the original movie. But damn, did they spend all the money on the CGI and graphics? The story/writing is mediocre. There are lots of issues where things just don't make sense. Not that this movie is unique in that way. Apparently script writers have no common sense. The biggest complaint I have with the movie is that there is simply no emotion in the new movie at all. It's supposed to illicit an emotional feeling and dialog about humanity. That's totally lost in the movie. And apparently they spent so much money on CGI they forgot to buy squibs and have blood when people are shot (not talking about when he uses the stun gun). I've also never seen Detroit look so clean :)

thats the most positive critique of starship troopers ive ever seen :-)

funny how such sillyness can become a classic, it gives me confidence in objective notions of quality...

do you think the production team/cast were willing it to be great (beyond its means) , or was it by accident/fluke....maybe its nice to know its can be either and both...if there was a formula for greatness...it wouldnt be so good when it comes around...

I don't really know the formula. I do find that some of the cast like Neil P Harris, Clancy Brown, and Dean Norris fit their roles quite perfectly. I think some of the things I appreciate about it were the subtlety with which the director applied the satire. You can't tell on first watch whether it's satire or campy (unless of course you read the book, which I had not and still haven't finished)

Some of the subtle ideas played the line between satire/campy like an enemy sent to kill and torture (notice the bug dropped a screaming soldier that was being flown away as a war-hostage after the soldier was shot dead by one of their own). No survival, need to eat, protect their home notion was introduced, just a clear cut kill and torture them or they'll kill and torture us. There is the same blur between the serve to be a full citizen idea which wasnt played out as a bad thing, just something that was accepted. You have to pay attention to the last two or three minutes of the movie in the context of a military-industrial-complex to see the satire they tried to pay against the ideals in the book

Other things I just think ended up being a mix of fun times being had by a big cast on destination. Knowing they only agreed to the shower scene if the director would direct the scene nude just confirms that

I've not been in the mood for anything new lately... Aside from a couple of movies... I've simply been re-watching others I've enjoyed. Mostly action and comedy movies. Don't seem to be in the mood for drama/thriller and such at the moment.

Most of the movies discussed recently I have sitting on my server waiting to be watched... I just have to be in the right mood for them and lately all I want is easy, fun movies that don't require over thinking.

Any recommendations?

One of my favorites that is not all that well known meeting your description is "Lone Star State of Mind"

I completely agree on this... not only did they try to add an emotional element to the movie (failing completely), they made the whole concept of Robocop unbelievable. The beauty of the original... which by the way is a classic that everyone should own... is that it's focus is on the title character and his struggle and not on the family.

Getting rid of the one strong female character and turning him into a man that gets shot in the first 5 mins was also a dumb move.

The original was a movie that had decent characters, good actors and used violence in such a way as too show the dank, dark side of a city under criminal control that's being manipulated by a single corporation to push through it's contracts to tear down and rebuild a destitute Detroit.... The remake was about a rich guy trying to make some more money by selling robots to nice clean cities... was it even set in Detroit because so little was said about it.. It is so far removed from the original concept that they had a nerve using the name Robocop at all. The lead actor was simply dreadful, completely unconvincing. The CGI was over the top and not in a good way... it was just ridiculous... Now a movie like Shoot em Up or John Wicke is how you do over the top action sequences in a good way.... This was simply sloppy and lazy.... Hey lets make him ride a bike and jump through a big glass window whilst he jumps around doing flips and twists and takes out half a dozen ED209's with his little pistol... give me a fricking break.

Not even the acting talents of Samuel L Jackson, Michael Keaton and Jackie Earl Harley could save this turkey of a movie.

I for one hope that it didn't make enough money to make them think a sequel would be a good idea.

I only rewatched this a few days ago... after seeing it last year I wanted to see if time had mellowed my view on it at all... It hadn't and reading your comments only made me hate it more.  :)

I think I need to go and watch the original again, get this bitter taste out of my mouth.

So last night I watched Penguins of Madagascar... it started well... I do love those penguins, they were the only redeeming things in those dreadful Madagascar movies.

Sadly it didn't live up to expectations... The best jokes are in the first 10 mins... One of which actually made me laugh out loud... but then the joke is repeated later on in the movie and I gritted my teeth... The whole plot was just silly... it's a movie about talking animals who can do amazing things, understand technology and act like an elite squad of commandos... and yet the plot seemed silly to me.  You know that it has to be bad... really bad for that to happen.

The animation was good, the antagonist wasn't mean or threatening in any way... it's fine for kids... But there isn't anything in it for adults and that's very disappointing. Dreamworks really dropped the ball on this one. They had an opportunity to create a great movie that would appeal to all ages and instead targeted it at the under 10's and didn't bother to include anything for the adults who would be the ones taking them to see it... Silly move Dreamworks, now the next time you try something like that... people won't trust you.

5/10... and trust me, I so wanted to love this movie.

Let's hope the Minions movie doesn't get screwed up this badly.

Good day,

Any good recommendation for old type movies (swords movies "adventure" like LOTR, Troy, Conan,  ... etc).

I think I already have big collections of these type of movies, but for sure I like to see your good rating for these so I fine what I do not have, thanks in advanced.

For a movie about social behavior, I just rewatched a movie I had almost forgotten about, The Conformist (1970), by Bernardo Bertolucci. It just got cleaned up for Blu ray recently and now looks amazing. It's originally in Italian, so that might throw some for a curve, but it's well worth the watch for anyone looking for a trul definitive social film. It's easy to see the influences on The Godfather and The Godfather Part II and well as Apocalypse Now in the film.

Well that was HARD work....we loved the style and cinematography...probably because the meaning went 100 miles above our heads :-)....were going to watch a "death in paradise" to normalise back to simpletons....Got any other interesting suggestions for when we pluck up the energy to have another go?

Just sat and watched Gone Girl with the wife.

Very slow and quite predictable.

Not worth 2.5 hours of our lives.

3/10

I watched Star Trek IV last night... I was sad after hearing the news the Leonard Nimoy passed and I think it's possibly the best screen version of Spock we ever saw.

My significant other did the very same thing.
