"Save vs AutoSave" dialogs - Issue in Backup and Restore settings page

Many dialogs save immediately on change, while others require a click of the save button.

Personally, I hate "auto save" when there is NO notification that the save was done, but that is a personal view.

My concern is the inconsistency, but even more so, no dialog that has unsaved data should ever let you leave without a confirmation.

Where I hit this today, was in the Backup & Restore.

I changed the location where my backups go on my server.  On my dev box, I will every once in a while reset my local system to a backup of my main server.

When running my dev server, I went to change the location then I clicked restore.  It was showing way out of date backups.  It took me a bit (early morning no coffee yet) to realize, I had to hit save on the new backup location in order for the restore to use the new location.

I would suggest, either make it autosave like other dialogs, or use the unsaved value when restore is clicked, or warn the user "unsaved data"

TIA

I thought about this long ago and every once and it comes back to kick me in the butt. I was going to make a similar FR for this, but on second thought, it is actually a deficiency rather than an FR or bug.

I can’t think of any other software that I currently use that has this same behaviour. It’s been pretty much a software standard for decades now that settings are either auto-saved or the user is prompted on what to do if they try to leave a settings page with unsaved changes!

Hi, ideally we’d like to auto save everywhere since that’s how most software works nowadays but there are some screens where that just isn’t feasible.

But in those situations, we should warn you before exiting the page without saving any changes you made.
