Delesmus 0 Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Hi, I'm experiencing a recurring issue with the OpenSubtitles plugin in Emby Server. Emby reports that I've reached the 200-subtitle daily download limit, even though I've only downloaded approximately 20 subtitles. I have an Emby Premiere Lifetime license and use OpenSubtitles exclusively through Emby. Server Configuration Operating system: Unraid 7.3.2 Emby installation: Docker container Container name: EmbyServer OpenSubtitles plugin: 1.0.71.0 (latest version available in my plugin catalog) Emby Premiere: Lifetime OpenSubtitles account: Standard account, with username/password configured in the plugin Other subtitle applications: None The Problem On October 28 and again on October 31, 2026, Emby stopped allowing subtitle downloads and returned an OpenSubtitles HTTP 406 error. The October 31 response included: { "requests": 201, "remaining": -1, "message": "You have downloaded your allowed 200 subtitles for 24h.", "reset_time_utc": "2026-10-31T23:59:58.000Z", "uk": "app_du73352" } On October 28, the same 201/200 quota error occurred, with a reset time of October 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. After reaching the limit, I also experienced subtitle searches returning no results. Search results subsequently became available again, but downloads remained blocked with the 200-download quota message. Download Activity I examined the Emby server logs and counted requests to: POST https://api.opensubtitles.com/api/v1/download The available logs show: Date Download requests October 28 27 October 31 18 These counts include unsuccessful requests. I also checked my personal OpenSubtitles.com account: The account displays a standard 20-download daily allowance. My download history shows 19 subtitle entries dated October 31. These correspond to subtitles I manually downloaded. The account history and available Emby logs do not explain how the 200-download allowance was exhausted. Automatic Subtitle Download Settings I checked both my Movies and TV Shows libraries. For both libraries: OpenSubtitles remains enabled as a subtitle provider. Automatic Subtitle Downloads → Download Languages is empty. No languages are selected for automatic downloading. I use manual subtitle searches and downloads. I also checked Emby's scheduled tasks. The automatic subtitle download task had last run several days earlier, not during the October 31 manual download session. Regular media library scans and metadata refreshes remain enabled. Troubleshooting Already Completed Confirmed my OpenSubtitles username and password are configured in Emby. Verified that OpenSubtitles plugin 1.0.71.0 is the latest version offered in my plugin catalog. Examined Emby's logs for OpenSubtitles API requests and errors. Confirmed the HTTP 406 quota error occurred on two separate days. Checked my OpenSubtitles.com account's download history and allowance. Verified that no other applications use my OpenSubtitles account. Confirmed that both media libraries have no automatic subtitle download languages selected. I have not reinstalled the plugin or restarted Emby as part of this troubleshooting. Questions Is the 200-download allowance associated with Emby's application/API credentials, rather than my individual OpenSubtitles account? Is the 200-download quota shared among multiple Emby users, or should each Emby installation/account receive its own allowance? Could this explain why the API reports 200 downloads when my account history and Emby logs show far fewer? Does Emby Premiere Lifetime currently provide any special OpenSubtitles download allowance, or has that arrangement changed? Is there anything else I should check in the plugin configuration or logs to determine where these requests are being counted? I'm happy to provide additional logs if needed. Thanks for any clarification or assistance!
SoliFlix 40 Posted 59 minutes ago Posted 59 minutes ago I think the "200 daily limit" message is outdated – free accounts are actually capped at 20 downloads per day since the switch from the old OpenSubtitles.org to the new API. Also, having Emby Premiere Lifetime doesn't change this, as the limit comes strictly from OpenSubtitles itself.
Delesmus 0 Posted 51 minutes ago Author Posted 51 minutes ago Thanks for the explanation! That makes sense, especially since my OpenSubtitles account shows a 20-download daily allowance. One thing I'm still curious about is why the API response explicitly reports "requests: 201" and "remaining: -1", with a message saying I've reached the 200-download limit. Is that simply an outdated API error message, or does the 200 figure represent a separate application-level quota? If the actual limit is 20 downloads for my account, that would explain the behavior. I'd just like to confirm before marking this as solved. Thanks again!
