Android Server on Shield: automatic update checks/downloads — prototype source for integration

Could Emby integrate an on-device update checker/downloader into a future Android Server release?

I built a small standalone Shield helper with AI assistance and would like to submit its source code as a starting point for developer review. It runs on the Shield without a PC, checks Emby's official stable release feed approximately daily, downloads the Android Server APK, and offers an Install button.

Important distinction: on stock Android 11, this is automatic checking/downloading with user-confirmed installation. It does not bypass Android's installer confirmation or provide silent installation.

The prototype validates the release's SHA-256 and file size, checks the package/version, pins the current Emby APK signing certificate, and rejects draft/beta releases and older/equal versions. It uses JobScheduler and PackageInstaller, with no root, ADB, accessibility automation, or Emby account credentials.

Tested on NVIDIA Shield with Android 11 and Emby Server 4.10.2.0: the APK installs, its independent background check reports the current version correctly, and the periodic job is queued. Since no newer stable release was available, the full upgrade/cancellation/restart path has not yet been tested. This is a prototype for review, not a production-ready updater.

Attached bundle includes Java source, manifest, portable build script, version tests, a review APK, and integration notes. It excludes personal settings, logs and signing keys. The README calls out remaining work, including playback-aware updates, graceful shutdown/restart, lifecycle/concurrency handling, download resumption, newer Android requirements and certificate rotation.

Would the Emby team consider incorporating this workflow into Android Server? If so, could you let me know your preferred contribution process and any licensing requirements?

HI, I guess this is neat, but we could also try to get into the store, right? Then it will do the work for us.

ok, but then why is it not already in the store?

I have been looking for years for Emby to be in the store for the shield, but it is not on there. I bought a shield almost 3 years ago and wanted to install it via the app store at the time (and still cannot). I only made this because it is not available in the store.

If it were so easy to submit to the Google Play Store, why is it still unavailable after I have been searching for three years?

I don't think it will be easy. I think the store review process for the server will be much harder to get through than for the client apps. But doesn't mean we can't get it through - we just don't know yet.
