Path Denied issue with Auto Organize

I've been running Emby for many many years.  Today I downloaded some files into my TV sorting folder and tried to use Emby to auto organize.  I am getting a path denied error.  Which is weird because I haven't changed Emby setup at all.  I did upgrade to the new version (4.10.2.0) this morning and I upgraded my Synology NAS (where all the files are stored) to 7.4.1-90080 Update 1 from 7.4.1-90080 in the last couple of days.

Is there a way to tell *which* path it is thinking is denied?  Source or destination?

Just as an add on here.  I connected to both shares (source and destination) from a separate computer with both users that could potentially be involved (the logged in Windows user and the one running the Emby app) and both of them had read/write capabilities in the source and destination so I have no idea what path it thinks is being denied.

More info.  Emby clearly has access to this destination as it added all of the metadata once I added the folder.  And when it tried to move the episodes today it created the season folders for them and inside of those season folders the season.nfo. files.

Hi, the log has examples, just search for "Failed to move file from". There you can see the source and target paths.

Have you confirmed that the emby system user has write access to the locations ?

Posted

Yes, as I mentioned above, I've connected to both places with the same account Emby uses and have verified write access.

You can also see that Emby is able to create all the metadata and season folders in the same place where it's trying to move the files to.

It clearly looks like a permissions issue in Emby's logs.  But no permissions have been changed and I can't find anything that's not working when I manually test permissions.

Right I can only confirm that there is a permissions issue. I cannot tell you why or solve it for you, as that is specific to your environment.

Yes, as I mentioned above

How did you confirm this?

My Emby runs on a Windows 11 computer.  I run it as a regular app (not a service) but I run it has a separate user for security reasons.  I've done this for years.  The files for Emby are all stored on a Synology NAS.  However, the new TV files are downloaded directly to the computer Emby runs on and then moved to the NAS.

What I've done to check permissions is, from a separate computer, have connected over SMB to both the share on the computer where the files are downloaded, and to the share where the main files are stored, with both the user which I am logged into Windows with, and the user which Emby runs with, and have tested creating files and folders in those locations, and then deleting them.  This all works fine.  Is there some other recommendation you have to test this?

I would suggest logging into windows as that separate user and making sure you can do the same things manually in windows explorer that the server is trying to do.

Although it sounds like you've done that, so I'm not sure. You may have to check permissions recursively. Maybe something is being overridden somewhere. I think that same error might also be thrown if anything is marked as readonly.

I just logged into the computer where Emby is running with the account that Emby runs underneath, and cut and pasted one of the files that it is failing on from the directory where it exists via the SMB share to the directory where it is trying to move it and failing.  Worked fine.

I think there is some weird change that happened in the last Emby update that broke this.  I am going to revert to the prior version and see if that fixes it.

@Lukewell downgrading didn't work.  I am starting to wonder if the issue is the recent change in the auto organize plugin.  I can't make any sense of it otherwise.  The permissions work everywhere.  There was no change to permissions since Emby was working and I can't find anywhere that the actual path permissions don't work.

As mentioned above, I logged in as Emby user, and moved the exact same file to the exact same place that Emby auto organize is claiming path denied.

Also, Emby is able to add metadata to the new TV series folder.   And create new series folders and add season.nfo data files to the same locations.

This has to be affecting other people too.  And it seems like the ONLY thing impacted is auto organize.

I don't think there's been an auto-organize plugin update lately? Anyway the error in the log is plain as day. The server can't move the file from A to B. I don't think any combination of server and plugin version is going to change that. It's more likely what I said earlier, overridden permissions on a subfolder, or something happened with a windows update, or DSM update.

You are right.  I went back through my Emby log and no auto organize updates have happened lately.  So I am really confused on what it could be.

But if I can move the file from folder A to folder B which is the same thing that auto organize is trying to do with the same user.  And if auto organize can add all the metadata and folders for all of the seasons for these new shows, what else could it be?  I can try to reinstall everything which is the only other option I see at this point but this seems silly.

I do agree that the log entry seems very specific.  But all of the troubleshooting around the error is not indicating the path it is pointing to.  The error does not specify which place it has an issue with (source or destination).  I am guessing you are going to have more and more of these cases soon.  I don't have anything very unique about my setup.

Is there any other troubleshooting you guys can help with?  Is there a debug I can turn on which shows where it thinks there is a path denied problem?  Anything that Emby can help with?

I don't understand how a several year old setup all of the sudden stops working without any changes and all of the checks pass about permissions but Emby still complains about them.

Just added these three series to Seerr which uses Sonarr to add stuff and all of the episodes  I wanted to add are back.  But pretty disappointing that I cant add things manually anymore.

I wish I could. I can only confirm what it is but can’t tell you why.  One thing you could test with is setting the destination folder as something on the local c drive, just as a quick test.

Okay so I spent some time doing troubleshooting and analysis this morning.  Here is what I found:

- I tried making Emby user an Administrator but this didn't resolve anything.  So switched it back.

- Your suggestion of moving the destination to the C drive worked.

Because of that, I started digging into the Synology logs.  It's strange because I wasn't even seeing the Emby user hit the Synology.

I downloaded Wireshark and  Initially thought I found an Error: STATUS_NO_EAS_ON_FILE.

I plugged the data into Claude to see if it could point me in the right direction.

It then pointed me to use Process Monitor to see what was happening there.  This is what I found there:

And here is what Claude had to say to this.

I was doing this as a network share because my main download folder was running under my primary user account and Emby didn't have file system access to it.  But I figured I would give this a shot and I just moved the download location for auto organize into the Emby's user folder.  This solved the problem.

So anyway, I am fixed, but it appears that Emby changed the way it does auto organize in a way that if it believes that source and destination are on the same system (or if both source and destination are on network shares), it does a rename operation, instead of a copy.  I'm sure you are going to have at least some other users who may be using network paths as the source and destination for auto-organize, and they are likely going to run into the exact same problem as I did here.
