Emby Discover

Browse movies and series from TMDB in Emby, watch trailers, and send requests to Radarr or Sonarr.

Latest release: 1.4.0.2 Version 1.1.0 was the first stable release (No longer beta).  Please report problems through GitHub Issues or in this thread, and include the relevant diagnostics (see Troubleshooting below).

## What it does

- Adds a **Discover Media** channel with trending, popular and upcoming movies and series, genre lists, studios and networks.
- Provides a **Discover** page in the Emby web client with browsing and search.
- Optionally makes the **Discover Media** tile under My Media open the Discover page directly (on by default). A **Channel tiles** button on the Discover page opens the channel lists (Genres, Popular Movies, etc.).
- Lets users request movies through Radarr and series through Sonarr (Sonarr v4 and v5; older versions are not supported).
- Series are requested **per season**: a series opens directly on its seasons, each with its own Request item and its own status (already in library, requested, or partially available).
- Shows separate **Request** and **Trailer** tiles, labelled on the tile image so they are easy to tell apart. The Trailer tile can be switched off in the plugin settings.
- Shows a confirmation clip with the poster and the request status after a request.
- Shows a trailer and a separate **Request** button on supported web-client detail pages. On a Request item, the Emby **Play** button is used to submit the request.
- Shows an actor's or director's other movies and series on their detail page, with a **Not in your library** row (web client).
- Provides a Play-based request flow for Android, TV and other clients that cannot run the web button script.
- Shows whether a title or season is already requested or available when that status can be matched in Radarr or Sonarr.
- Interface and diagnostics available in Dutch, English and German.

## Requirements

- **Emby Server.** The plugin is built against the stable Emby SDK (`MediaBrowser.Server.Core`) and works on both Emby stable and beta servers.
- A [TMDB API key](https://www.themoviedb.org/settings/api).
- Radarr for movie requests and/or Sonarr v4 or v5 for series requests.
- Emby's bundled `ffmpeg` is used to create channel artwork and the request confirmation clip.

## Install

1. Download `Emby.Plugins.Discover.dll` from the [latest release](https://github.com/mrmuiz/Discover-Media/releases/latest).
2. Stop Emby, then copy the DLL into the Emby data directory's `plugins` folder. For Docker installations, this is usually `<Emby config folder>/plugins` (inside the container: `/config/plugins`).
3. Remove older copies of the Discover DLL from that folder so only one version remains.
4. Start Emby.
5. Open **Dashboard > Plugins > Discover**, configure the TMDB key and Radarr/Sonarr connection details, test the connections, select the quality profile and root folder, and save.
6. Give the intended users access to channels in their Emby user settings.
7. **For the first channel load, run the Internet Channels refresh once:** open **Dashboard > Scheduled Tasks > Internet Channels** and start **Refresh Internet Channels**. The initial refresh can take several minutes or longer. Leave it running until it finishes; be patient and do not repeatedly start the task.

### Updating

Replace only the DLL; the plugin ID is unchanged, so your settings are kept. Restart Emby, run **Refresh Internet Channels** once, and hard-refresh your browser (Ctrl+F5).

### How the request button is loaded

The button script is embedded in the plugin DLL. On startup the plugin adds a small loader to the Emby web client's `index.html`, so the script runs on every page of the web client (movie, series, actor and director pages), not only after opening Discover. This requires write access to Emby's web folder; with a read-only Docker image the loader cannot be added and the script only loads after you open **Discover**.

After installing or updating, restart Emby and hard-refresh your browser (Ctrl+F5). Native Emby apps do not run browser scripts. There, the **Discover Media** channel opens normally and requests use the Play-based flow.

### Docker

Do not use `localhost` for Radarr or Sonarr unless those services share the Emby container's network namespace. Use an address that Emby can reach, such as a service/container name on the same Docker network or the host's LAN address.

## Use

- Open **Discover Media** and browse a list, genre, studio or network.
- In the web client, open a title and choose **Request** where the separate web button is available. On a series, choose the seasons to request when prompted.
- To request from a Request item or a Season item, including on TV/Android clients, open the item and press **Play**.
- To watch a trailer, open its **Trailer** item and press **Play**.
- Open folders and tiles to browse them; do not press Play on a folder.
- If you don't want the Trailer tiles, you can turn them off in the plugin settings (Dashboard > Plugins > Discover).

## Configuration

| Setting | Purpose |
| --- | --- |
| TMDB API key | Provides titles, artwork and metadata. |
| Plugin language | Defaults to following Emby's server UI language; Dutch, English and German can also be selected manually. |
| TMDB language | Defaults to following the selected language (for example nl-NL or de-DE); a TMDB language can also be selected manually. |
| Radarr URL and API key | Sends movie requests to Radarr. |
| Sonarr URL and API key | Sends series requests to Sonarr (v4 or v5). |
| Quality profile and root folder | Selects the destination settings used for requests. Choose values returned by **Test connection**. |
| Show the Trailer tile | Shows or hides the Trailer tile next to Request in the channel. On by default. |
| Tile opens Discover page | When on (default), the **Discover Media** tile under My Media opens the Discover page. When off, it opens the channel lists. Applies immediately; use the **Channel tiles** button on the Discover page to reach the channel lists while this is on. Web client only. |
| Show Diagnostics | Optional yellow debug message and technical media information on item pages. **Off by default.** |

API keys are stored in the plugin configuration and masked in the settings form by default.

## Troubleshooting

Open **Dashboard > Plugins > Discover > Status and diagnostics**. It reports the plugin and Emby versions, service connectivity, channel visibility, request counts and recent plugin events. Do not post API keys or other secrets in an issue or in this thread.

For the first channel refresh, run **Refresh Internet Channels** from **Dashboard > Scheduled Tasks > Internet Channels** and wait for it to complete. The initial run may take several minutes or longer; avoid starting duplicate refreshes while it is still running.

For web-client button problems:

1. After installing or updating the plugin, restart Emby and hard-refresh (Ctrl+F5). The script is loaded by the web client automatically. If the Docker image is read-only, open **Discover** once to load it.
2. Enable **Show Diagnostics** in the plugin settings if you want the yellow item-page diagnostic. It is off by default.
3. Confirm that only one Discover DLL is installed and that Emby was restarted after replacing it.
4. If the script is still inactive, open the browser developer console, copy the relevant error, and include it with the diagnostics report. Android/TV apps do not support the browser button; use the channel's Request item and press Play instead.
5. Open the browser console (F12) and filter on "Discover web". You should see "lader actief" and "config RedirectTile = true/false"; each tile click logs whether it redirects and why.

Other common causes:

- The user cannot see the channel: grant channel access in that user's Emby settings.
- Radarr or Sonarr cannot be reached from Emby: verify the URL from the server/container, not just from a desktop browser.
- Old channel artwork or entries remain cached: run **Refresh Internet Channels** and wait for completion; Emby may retain channel items between requests.
- Status indicators can lag by up to 5 minutes if a download completes outside the plugin.

## Build

Use the source ZIP attached to the same release to build that exact version:

```
dotnet build EmbyDiscover/EmbyDiscover.csproj -c Release
```

See the releases page on GitHub.

I’ve been playing around with Tofa media server and this is one of the features baked directly into it. Part of the appeal with these sorts of software (also thinking Roon for music) is this discovery journey. The ability to click on an actor, check movies they’ve been in and then if it’s not in your library, request it. Same with missing sequels and generally just discovering new material directly in the app you’re using to browse.

is this something that emby is looking to add or am I wasting my time waiting?

as you can see from the screenshot, it has a little + icon on the poster and it sends a request to Radarr.

My plugin has nothing to do with Emby. And yes Tofa has this build in. And i also thing this should be a option for Emby to have this in it by default.

Till then this is one of the options to  request things from within Emby.
Im working on a new version with some more options. And most things we cant have cause Emby wont let us. So im sorry for that. I cant help that.

It was more of a question for the emby devs to take this plugin and bake it into emby. I’ll create a request in the correct subforum. .

What you’ve done is great 👍

I know, and no problem. And untill this is baked in to Emby i will try to continue with the plugin. A new release is on the way with seperate season requests etc.

**Discover Media 1.1.0 – first stable release**

Follow-up on my earlier post: Discover Media is no longer a beta. Version 1.1.0 is out.

Discover Media adds a Discover channel and a Discover page to Emby: browse trending, popular and upcoming movies and series (TMDB), watch trailers, and request titles through Radarr or Sonarr, Seerr-style, without running a separate app.

**What's new in 1.1.0**
- Sonarr v4 and v5 support for series requests (tested with both; older versions are not supported).
- Requesting a series per season now really works: only the chosen seasons and their episodes are monitored and a search is started.
- The Request and Trailer tiles now have their name on the image, so you can tell them apart.
- Seasons that are already in Sonarr say so (already requested, partially available, or in your library). You can still request again.
- The request confirmation clip is simpler: a large poster with the status and what was requested, readable on a TV or phone.
- The diagnostics and status pages now follow the plugin language (Dutch, English or German).

**Updating**
Replace only the DLL; your settings are kept. Restart Emby, run "Refresh Internet Channels" once, and hard-refresh your browser (Ctrl+F5).

**Requirements**
Emby Server (tested with 4.11.0.10), a TMDB API key, and Radarr and/or Sonarr.

Download, README and changelog: https://github.com/mrmuiz/Discover-Media/releases/tag/v1.1.0

Feedback, bug reports and ideas are welcome, here or as an issue on GitHub. If you report a problem, please include the output of Dashboard > Plugins > Discover > Status and diagnostics (without API keys).

Emby Discover uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. It is not affiliated with Emby, Radarr or Sonarr.

Discover Media 1.1.1

Bug fix and speed release.

Fixed

- Requesting a season that had never been requested before could play the plain landscape clip without poster or info. It now shows the proper card with the season poster and status, like seasons that are already in Sonarr.
- Closing the page or going back while a request card was still being prepared no longer causes the plain clip to be played the next time.

Faster

- Confirmation cards are created about 4x faster.
- Cards for all seasons are now prepared in the background when you open the season list, so they are ready when you press Play.
- Status, extra info and season poster are fetched at the same time, and the poster and backdrop are downloaded in parallel.
- After a request, the Sonarr list is no longer fully reloaded on the next click. Only the new series is added to the cache.

Notes

- The card background no longer slowly zooms in; it is now a still image with a fade in and out.
- Stored cards are re-created once after the update.
- Built against Emby SDK 4.11.0.5-beta6.

Thank you for this plugin!

If I may offer a suggestion - can you please consider offering a setting to not display trailers?

Works on all. Only thing on tvs etc. is the button is called play, but functions as request button.
In a browser it will say : Request

I haven't checked, but how will this work alongside Seerr. I use Seerr now to request stuff and other things seerr do. 🙂

## Discover Media 1.1.2

**Fixed**
- Green checkmark (watched) now works per season. Each season has its own key, so playing (requesting) one season no longer marks all seasons of that series as watched. The trailer tile and the request tile are unchanged.
- Diagnostics on the Discover page showed the request-button script as v1.1.0 while the server was v1.1.2.0, which looked like an outdated script. The script version is now 1.1.2, so both match.

**Trailer tile**
- The Trailer tile next to Request can be switched on or off in the plugin settings ("Show the Trailer tile next to Request in the channel", added in 1.1.1, default on).
- Preparation for a trailer tile per season (default off, no checkbox in the settings yet).

**Technical**
- Channel version 72. The scripts keep the same resource names.

**Update**
1. Replace the plugin dll and restart Emby Server.
2. Open Emby, press Ctrl+F5 and open Discover from the menu.
3. The diagnostics should show `YES v1.1.2` and `server: v1.1.2.0`.

Tested with Emby Server 4.11.0.10. Please report problems in the issues and include the diagnostics line from the Discover page.

This has nothing to do with Seerr. So you can still use Seerr or SeerrTV.
With this you can request from withing Emby without Seerr.
