Handling Sports in MB

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm not sure why no one has tried to create metadata source for sports. You would think there would be demand.

I did think of one way to at least generate the images and that is to use MediaCenterMaster since it has a function that allows you to generate a thumbnail or background from footage in the video itself.

Otherwise, its a very manually intensive job, but I think I'll be satisfied with it once its done.

Maybe the MB team could create a special section for Sports that we could use. I'd like for it to not be part of TV or Movies if possible.

I was wondering if any of you archive sporting events like say TV shows and how you go about handling them with MB.

I have several college football games that I would like to add to my MB library, but I'm not sure how I should tag them so that they are sorted properly. I know I can edit the xml files with the metadata info, so that is not a problem.

There isn't any official support for say a 'Sports' section, so I assume it would go into TV.

Its also too bad that there are not any online sources for sports metadata like there is for TV, Movies, and Music. I would think there would be demand for such info.

So yeah, I'm looking for suggestions on how best to handle such media.

With no sources for images and metadata, you'll have to do it all manually.

Personally, I would add it as a TV show, since I wouldn't want it mixed in with movies.  Maybe use the year for season 1, 2 etc if possible?  You would have to add the metadata manually in the web interface.

I do this, but lets just say that there is no easy way to handle the metadata. Since there isn't any kind of aggregator publicly available you need to enter everything manually and pull caps and images/backdrops.

My structure is as follows: (.../Sport/League/Year/YYYY-MM-DD - Home v Away.ext)

MB3 will default these to under the movies view, so you must list them as "Home Videos" when adding the collection.

My recommendation, is to not even bother with the metadata, unless sports are your primary use for MB3, and to just change the views in your client to only show text/detail view and not thumbs/posters. You could pull posters for leagues/seasons/teams, but for each individual match/game it would prove cumbersome to manually pull a photo of the game in question from the web.

A sports metadata scraper is something on my wishlist for years now though.

I handle it by setting it up like a TV season. I have over a decade of Oklahoma Football videos, and I use Years for seasons, and the order in which they played as episodes. I have to hand enter the metadata myself, but I usually use the boxscore summary as the description. And use a helmet image for the episode image. Depending on how many games you have archived it could be a lot of work, but I've used MetaBrowser in the past to do all my metadata quickly.

See example.

Looks cool with all your hand done metadata and images.

I like your picture of the Notre Dame game from last year. I have the same picture hanging on my wall :)

Wish it had ended better.

I love the idea of using the helmet images for the "episodes". But, where did you find them and how do you get them to display like that?

Wow, that looks very slick. I think I will try to do that with my collection. Its not very big yet, so I am happy to do this now and then just handle each new video as I get it.

Same. At least we got them this year. Still would have been much better last.

I just get the images off of Google, and add an alpha channel in PhotoShop, then save it as a PNG. OU mostly plays the same 9 teams every year with a few additions, so I just keep all the icons in a folder until I need them again, I only have to add a few new helmets each year.

I too have a bunch of OU games from the last few years as a recent graduate. You've inspired me to actually put my data/images in order - that stuff looks great.

Looks good, LASooner.  Exactly what I was imagining.

How would you feel about putting together a collection of NCAA teams helmet images?

Here you go:  http://www.mghelmets.com/

You can even find the correct helmet from the year of the game if you wish.

Awesome. Thanks! Now I just need to find a way to convert those gif's!

I have found a program to convert the gif files into png files but it seems the quality is very bad. Any ideas on how I can convert the files and maintain quality?

@@LASooner : Any chance you could post a sample episode and season metadata file and file structure? Been trying to do this, but MB3 server metadata editor is being uncooperative and my metabrowser subscription expired (don't want to subscribe just to do these edits). Also, MB3 doesn't appear to be saving metadata files in the season folder if it is classified as home videos (I don't want my sports showing up under TV show view), which is a bit odd.

It's not odd. The tv series structure requires the tv show collection type.

No way to force it, without it getting bunched together?

Mine are set as Series, Season and Episodes and they do show up in the TV collection. The only TV show that is a comedy one season and a drama the next. :)

I like UFC. A little harder to deal with vs football.

I would think getting metadata our for sports would be a huge task. Think about all the sports out there. Then all the games on any weekend.

One questions I have is what do you use to create metadata?

Metabrowser, but you can use the built in tools in the MB3 server. If they added drag and drop support for add images, I might stop using metabrowser
